So first pink was the new black, then orange was the new pink, then macarons were the new cupcakes until canelés became the new macaron - but no one could make canelés properly so that didn't last too long - and before we knew it salted caramel became the new everything and engulfed cupcakes, and macarons and ice cream. Now crepes are the new pancakes. Or are crepes the new cupcake? Or for that matter are crepes the new black? In the interest of logical progression I should lead you … [Read more...]
Asian Mixed Mushroom, Kale & Soba Noodle Soup
A few years back I spent 10 days in Japan with a girlfriend from collage. We trekked around Tokyo, did the hot springs local-style in Hakone, got caught in a blizzard, navigated public transport, said sumimasen a thousand times and ate more soba noodles than you could imagine. When I got home I never wanted to see a noodle or a piece of sushi ever again... or so I thought. About three weeks later it was all I could think about. My insistence on 'must have soba like in Japan' led us to … [Read more...]
Berry Filled Hot Cross Buns & an Easter Breakfast Braid
How does one make a batch of Hot Cross Bun even better? Stuff them with berry filling of course. Yes, it is a genius idea [if I do say so myself] but I can't take full responsibility for it... Let me back up a little bit first. A few months back I was over on Claire's site and she was sharing the exciting news that she had become a member of the Secret Recipe Club. It reminded me that I had applied for a spot at one point so I chased it up, and before I knew it I had a group! The way … [Read more...]
Easter Egg Salad Wraps
It was the same drill every year, a holiday tradition involving whomever was at our house on Easter morning. It started when we were small enough to believe that gifts and treats were left by a mystical figure while we were sleeping, and continued well into our early adult years when we knew who really left the gifts, but didn't care because surprise and anticipation held enough of a shimmery charm to continue the charade. Before we appreciated the allure of sleeping late, my brother and I … [Read more...]
6 Natural Food-based Easter Egg Dyes
It's official, this whole need-to-create-things is hereditary. Not only the creativity gene bit but the comfort found in just making stuff. I was at mum's house for a few weeks during our last trip and one day she brought out a lovely, frilly, very colourful apron, "Look! I saw this and had to get it for you. Thought it may be a bit of inspiration... you could make these!" It was a cute apron, and it did give me a few new ideas, but in the midst of packing our already busting suitcases … [Read more...]
Watermelon & Cucumber Salad with Tahini, Coconut & Lime Dressing
Oh summer, please don't go. You've been nothing but a tease, an irritating teenager, and a raging lunatic for the past two years, but I keep hoping for a reasonable turn. Is it too much to ask for blue sky, reasonable beach temperatures and low humidity on a regular basis? But I must admit, even through the hotter-than-an-oven days and the rain and the indecision, I still love you more than winter. While the weather in Sydney has been schizophrenic at best this summer, the fruit has … [Read more...]
Gluten Free Quinoa & Buckwheat Skillet Bread
And there it was again, a very happy "I wonder what would happen if... " accident. Somehow quinoa flour does that in my kitchen, first it was tortillas, then a chocolate crumble crust and now bread. But in the midst of making this at least once a week for the past three months I've neglected to share it with you. Shame on me. This is 'Emergency Bread' at its best. Less than 20 minutes start to finish and gluten free to boot. Crumbly, light, slice-able. The only thing I haven't yet … [Read more...]
