Salad is a simple act. A few fresh vegetables washed in cool water. A sharp knife slicing effortlessly through crisp leaves. A tangy dressing thrown together with what's on hand. The first bite is refreshing after days of excess. The second is calming and reassuring. A return to clean simplicity, shared with family over the sound of old stories, squealing children and end of summer breezes. I probably should have made another batch for the second half of our trip … [Read more...]
Concord Grape Curd & Vegan Meringue Pie Parfaits
Well now isn't that a mouthful in more ways than one. I mentioned that we are off on another adventure, however as the first two weeks of our trip involved hanging out in Cape Cod with my extended family, followed by a week at Mom's farm in upstate NY, it was nearly impossible to keep me out of the kitchen. I found myself whipping up salads and cakes and more salads along the way so figured I may as well pull out a slightly unusual twist for this month's Sweet Adventures Blog … [Read more...]
Something for Jess – Chippendale, Sydney
You'd be forgiven for thinking that Something for Jess has been a fixture in Chippendale for much longer than the few months it's been open. The casual vibe, attentive service and creative flavour combinations tick along effortlessly - inviting you to stay and have a relaxed meal or feel free to rush off, take-away sandwich and coffee in hand, as the ancient cash register tallies up your total. The salvaged furniture, chalkboard menus and mismatched crockery scream hipster, but are in … [Read more...]
Spiced Pear, Red Wine & Chocolate Cake
I'm sorry, it was entirely unfair for me to wait this long to post this cake. Entirely. It was baked and devoured back in April as part of a Seasonal Sunday Lunch feast and somehow is only now seeing the light of day. Remember this Drunken Chocolate Caramel Tart madness? This is that, but re-born into dark, rich cake. With spiced red wine poached pears. And a sticky red wine sauce. And as I just got back from a girls weekend in the Hunter Valley a red wine infused dessert is so … [Read more...]
Spicy Passionfruit, Coconut & Prawn Lettuce Wraps
A tangy, sweet, spicy, crunchy explosion of flavor and texture. A dose of summer in the middle of winter. A slightly unexpected combination that turned out simply perfect... Can you tell I'm kind of in love with this recipe? Even the colours make me happy. This is not the first time passionfruit has appeared round these parts, but it is usually included in a dessert such as Passionfruit & Coconut Self-saucing Pudding Cake or this insane White Chocolate Cream Cheese Passionfruit … [Read more...]
Tea Time Tuesday #4: Green Ginger & my recipe in a cookbook alongside Maggie Beer
Yep, you read right my recipe alongside Maggie Beer, imagine that. If you've been around these parts for a while you'll remember back when my Pear, Goat Cheese & Caramelised Onion Jam Sandwich won the 'What can you pair with a pear' recipe competition. Well that very recipe is now rubbing shoulders with creations from Australian chefs such as Vincent Gadan, Justin North, David Bitton and the aforementioned Maggie Beer, in a new cookbook from Australian Pears. Rediscover … [Read more...]
Samphire & Kipfler Potato Salad
Traditional America-land potato salad is something I always avoided at picnics growing up. Gloopy, mayo-saturated, oddly sweet, purchased from the grocery store deli counter, sitting in the sun for ages - it never did it for me. Luckily my Mom would use a vinegar-based dressing whenever she made potato or pasta salads - so much better! Now salt and potatoes go hand-in-hand, so when thinking about what to do with the crisp and salty samphire I received in a goodie bag a while back it just made … [Read more...]
