Chips and beer, chips and beer, chips and beer. Well maybe just chips, but still, they would be brilliant with beer. Also, if you have never had Chimay... what is there to even say about it... a spring evening with friends, an autumn afternoon in a beer garden, a winter's night curled up with a good book... Belgian, rich, a little bit fruity, and just simply amazing. However, if you are a perpetual 'gimme a pint of America-land Light' kind of person, while the chips will still go down a … [Read more...]
Surprising Stove-top Mac-n-Cheese
Sometimes we all need a mini-break. A chance to juggle one less ball for a change. To take a deep breath - or perhaps two. Even people who sit at home and eat bon-bons and go out to posh lunches and afternoon shopping dates may need to take a break sometimes, you know, for a spa day or some such equally relaxing activity - FYI, if you're one of those people, call me, I'll be happy to help you out. Christina from The Hungry Australian is one of those crazy-busy, always-on-the-go people - … [Read more...]
Loaded Oats for the New Year
I was having a look back at some posts from the end of 2011 and realised that for someone who doesn't really eat sugar there were a hell of a lot of desserts and almost no savory dishes being shared... oops. Some of it has to do with my ongoing struggle with nighttime photography and not having the right lighting [vow to sort that out sooner rather than later] because most cooking is being done after getting home from the real-life job. And while I used to snap away and post delicious recipes … [Read more...]
Not your ordinary Gingerbread… and oh, I’m famous…
Oooh, what a mysterious title. Not really all that mysterious, but it's late and so, you know, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Also, ~famous~ is entirely relative in its use here, but we'll get to that shortly. There are many things about this Gingerbread that do indeed make it extra-ordinary however. For starters it has Pomegranate seeds on it - how festive are those little buggers?! And then there is the piping - Eggnog Royal Icing. Yep, you read right, Eggnog.Royal.Icing. A … [Read more...]
Whole Spelt Pie Crust
HEY, HEY YOU! I've recently updated this recipe over here -- you may want to pop over and use the new one instead! It's been refined over the past five years but I wanted to keep this one (instead of doing a 301 redirect for all you good blogger types) because I do think it's important to keep a record of where you've been. ~ JJ --------- I probably shouldn't start a pie crust post by telling you that I don't really like crust. Scandalous isn't it? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate it, and … [Read more...]
Banana & Almond Butter Stuffed French Toast
Happy Bloggiversary to me! 84th & 3rd turned 1 year old last week and to celebrate I turned the computer off, boycotted cooking and went to yoga, I deserved it. A whole year, can you believe it? In honour of this momentous event I made French Toast for brunch this past weekend. Not this French Toast, or this one but a whole new beast - Banana and Almond Butter Stuffed French Toast. And it doesn't stop there... vanilla, orange juice, and oh, right, Bourbon. Because you can't really have a … [Read more...]
Pumpkin Pie Spread
Um, yum, just yum. For as much as I love Cake! I am at least as equally obsessed with Pie! Not the crust bit mind you, in my opinion it really just gets in the way of the business end of pie - the filling. Sweet, savory, creamy, fruity, whatever, I could sit with a pie tin and eat the whole middle bit - one small spoonful at a time. Now I've just shared with you my crusade on pumpkin, so what else to do but get straight to the point on this one. Apple, pumpkin, spices and voila, a spread … [Read more...]
