At this moment in Australia there is a plebiscite (a postal survey to gather opinions) asking Australians if same-sex marriage should be legalised. It is, at its best, ridiculous. Politicians shirking responsibility of actually having to make a decision on a highly contentious, emotionally charged topic that is in reality a matter of equal rights law, not personal opinion, is not only insidious but truly irresponsible. For starters the postal vote is optional (in a country where voting is … [Read more...]
Rainbow Cloud Eggs (or Unicorn Cloud Eggs, if you must)
If you haven't yet been inundated by cloud eggs you may be living in a cave (or perhaps simply don't live on Instagram and Facebook, ahem...). But either way, even if you are familiar with them I can guarantee you've never seen a rainbow/mermaid/unicorn version until now. Unicorn smoothies and mermaid toast are all the brilliantly time-wasting, superfood powdered rage these days, so it was only logical (completely illogical) for me to take the flash in a pan cloud egg craze a ridiculous … [Read more...]
Rainbow Pumpkin & Beetroot Oatmeal Bowl
The other day I gave you all sorts of ways to add veggies to your breakfast bowl, now it's time to put some of those ideas into action. I'm a big believer that rainbows always win and breakfast bowls are no different. Bright swirls of pumpkin and beetroot puree pack a veggie punch, while kiwi and blueberries add a colourful tang. You could certainly apply these topping combos to a bowl of yoghurt and muesli, or even flakes if that's your thing, but oatmeal porridge is my go-to more … [Read more...]
Rainbow Swirl Hot Cross Buns
It's not the first time I've made rainbow food and coloured it using only natural (from nature not from a lab) ingredients. It's also not the first time I've made slightly out-there Hot Cross Buns. And I'd love to tell you that I made these a million ways and this is the best but truth be told time got the better of me this year and right now done is better than shelved for another year. In theory veggie powders would work a treat but fresh produce was all I had so that's what … [Read more...]
Summer Mango Salsa
For so long I took photos only for myself. And then I got better at taking photos and started shooting for other people. And somewhere along the line I kind of stopped shooting for myself. Then last weekend RJ requested fish tacos with mango salsa for dinner and there was something so very perfect about the pile of fresh, brightly coloured produce we brought home from the shop that it simply had to be photographed. Of course not just made and shot but chopped and dropped and spread … [Read more...]
In My Kitchen: August 2015
It’s once again time for In My Kitchen and as per usual this is a collection of things from the past month — a small snippet of those seen over on Instagram — in loosely interpreted categories and no particular order… ------ Kitchen Shenanigans I decided one night a few weeks back that I needed to bake bread. I didn't measure, kneaded and rested randomly, and ended up with the best loaf I've made in years (wholewheat, whole spelt blend). Lunch the next day (where I took time out from … [Read more...]
Summer Fruit Platter Smoothie
Ok, ok, so you're probably not going to make a fruit platter for the sole purpose of throwing it all in a blender. BUT if you were to make a fruit platter for a bbq and end up with leftovers once the festivities ended, throwing it all in a blender the next day would be the perfect solution to reclaiming your fridge shelf back. That said, 'Leftover Fruit Platter Smoothie' didn't quite have the same ring to it, so 'Summer' won. On the other hand if you had a crowd for breakfast … [Read more...]
