If you've never brined a turkey before roasting now is the time to start. No, no, not next year, now -- or at the very least the next time you cook anything remotely turkey related. Because once you do you'll never go back, seriously. Ok, ok, how can I be so sure? Well only a few weeks ago I was you, well not really you, that would be impossible and a little awkward, but the non-brine-er part of you who is questioning my blatant confidence. You see for years I'd intended to try this … [Read more...]
Zebra-Striped Choc-Orange Vegan Cheesecake
I was going to let Halloween pass by this year with nary a mention. Then the other day, after talking to a girlfriend about her over-the-top ghoulish creation, I was bitten by the trick-or-treat bug. So much as I love the crazy Halloween recipes that float across the interwebz this time of year I find myself sticking with a slightly tamer theme -- if you've been here a while you may recognise the colour combo from my Halloween Ice Cream Bars with Chocolate & Green Goo Magic Shell -- … [Read more...]
Hot Cross Bun French Toast & Mixed Fruit Compote
The sentiment of this recipe (and for that matter this post) hovers between "why not?" and "well of course I did, are you really surprised?". Hot Cross Buns -- with all their soft and fluffy filled with spice and love glory -- are best on the day, or day after, they are pulled from the oven. Not that they taste any less brilliant beyond that point, but like any homemade bread they need something to refresh them slightly. Toasting and smearing with curd or butter certainly … [Read more...]
Sticky Date & Chai Hot Cross Buns
It's been a bit busy on the work front, and subsequently a bit quiet around here lately, but I couldn't let Easter pass without yet another Hot Cross Bun recipe. Spiked with chai tea and plenty of spices, the dates are kneaded into the dough creating swirls throughout the soft, just-sweet buns. Simple and a bit moody (the day, the buns and the styling), they gave me the perfect excuse to pull out my new crafty, DIY tiled background. Half of these went to work with RJ, the other half … [Read more...]
Buttermilk Pumpkin Pie for Pi Day
Happy Pi Day! That's right, not Pie Day -- that one falls on 23 January each year as declared by The American Pie Council, "the only organisation committed to preserving America's pie heritage ... [to] raise awareness, enjoyment and consumption of pies". But Pi Day -- derived from the date matching the first three digits of Pi, an infinite non-repeating pattern created by the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter aka 3.14159265359andonandonitgoes. Apparently Pi Day was … [Read more...]
SABH March 2014: Luck o’the Irish – Plus 11 St. Patrick’s Day Dessert Ideas
I have a soft spot for St Patrick's Day -- it did after all serve as the backdrop for meeting RJ twelve years ago and pretty instantly changed any hazy plans I had for the future -- so when it came to picking a theme for this month's Sweet Adventures Blog Hop a celebration of all things green/rainbow/gold/potato/whiskey/stout/oatmeal was an obvious choice. Anything's game so long as it's Irish or inspired by St Patrick's Day festivities and the details about the hop are below -- but to … [Read more...]
Singapore Chilli Crab deja vu
Remember how I said I was going to work my way through drafts and archives? This is one of those, originally posted back in 2011 only to be re-made and photographed in March of last year -- which of course means I want to go through the whole dance again for better photos... —— It is spicy and messy in the best way possible. It takes ages to eat due to the process of picking the meat from the shells. It should be served on a newspaper-covered table while wearing clothes that are easy to … [Read more...]
