Another one to work through the archives, I give you photos and a recipe from February, with a slightly inter-connected stream of consciousness set of run on sentences from today. Shocker. I could eat dumplings every day. Really. These however are not dumplings, obviously -- but they are something you can get at dumpling stands and therefore make me think of dumplings. These little beauties, in case the title didn't tip you off, are steamed buns. Do you have any idea how good steamed … [Read more...]
Smokey BBQ Beans
Another one to work my way through drafts and archives... ------ Created originally to go with the brisket, sharing these beans now was spurred on by a stunningly disappointing serving of baked eggs experienced this morning at a local cafe. The eggs were fine, the beans however were sickly sweet and straight out of a can. Price and location aside I really wanted a good brunch, so I now feel the need to make these or these or this for cafe-in-my-kitchen baked eggs... Sometimes you … [Read more...]
Vegan Creamy Mushroom & Kale Soup
Another one to work my way through the archives. Made and shot in July last year to go with the Gluten Free Quinoa Cornbread, then promptly filed away -- until now. It is after all getting cooler again in Sydney and that can mean only one thing, soup season has arrived. I did originally have this post titled Magical Mushroom Soup -- now wouldn't that be a tease of a thing to do? Of course it is the soup that is magical rather than magical mushrooms (ahem) being used for soup. Apologies to … [Read more...]
Roasted Pear, Parmesan & Spiced Pecan Salad
Another one from the archives, a salad made and shot last September -- after Cape Cod and before our road trip -- at mom's farm. Two weeks amongst row of pears dropping fruit at our feet and grapes staining our fingers purple. Sometimes the words flow and sometimes they don't. Right now they aren't, so instead just some pictures to hopefully brighten your day -- and possibly your dinner. Pictures of medusa-esque pear trees so heavy with fruit they don't know what to do with … [Read more...]
Alpha Restaurant – Sydney CBD
It would be naive to assume that a culture defined by enormous stone temples, wildly animated speech patterns and an ancient tribe of all-powerful gods would do anything by halves. Enter Alpha, the inner-city restaurant launched last year by the Hellenic Club. Mere steps into the Victorian-era building in the centre of Sydney's CBD and you know you're in for a treat. The cavernous space has been transformed into a warm and inviting venue -- quite a feat for a room seemingly the size of a … [Read more...]
Singapore Chilli Crab deja vu
Remember how I said I was going to work my way through drafts and archives? This is one of those, originally posted back in 2011 only to be re-made and photographed in March of last year -- which of course means I want to go through the whole dance again for better photos... —— It is spicy and messy in the best way possible. It takes ages to eat due to the process of picking the meat from the shells. It should be served on a newspaper-covered table while wearing clothes that are easy to … [Read more...]
Slow Smoked Pepper-Crusted BBQ Brisket
Remember how I said I was going to work my way through drafts and archives? This is one of those, written in the beginning of December 2013 then filed away (but certainly not forgotten) in favour of far too many Christmas dessert recipes, it happens. In any case, instead of changing it to suit late summer I'm leaving it as is, because I can. Stay tuned for all the sides too. ------ Yesterday (well yesterday when I wrote this on 2 December) was the first day of summer in Sydney. For some … [Read more...]
