Another one from the archives, a salad made and shot last September -- after Cape Cod and before our road trip -- at mom's farm. Two weeks amongst row of pears dropping fruit at our feet and grapes staining our fingers purple. Sometimes the words flow and sometimes they don't. Right now they aren't, so instead just some pictures to hopefully brighten your day -- and possibly your dinner. Pictures of medusa-esque pear trees so heavy with fruit they don't know what to do with … [Read more...]
In My Kitchen: March 2014
I managed to only miss one month this time in linking up with Celia for an In My Kitchen post, yet it still seems to be a big one. Here it goes… Kitchen shenanigans A few years back I stopped buying tomatoes in tins. Tins are lined with BPA (bad chemical, google it if you want to know more) and the acid in tomatoes leaches it out worse than most foods. However no tins meant my cooking was limited to smooth sauce rather than lovely, textural crushed tomatoes (yeah, yeah, first world problems … [Read more...]
Sweet Potato Stout Quick Bread
If this is your first time here you may be better served heading over to look at popsicles or brownies and coming back another day... It's been an, interesting, few weeks on a few different fronts and I'm feeling a bit ranty. Still around? Well you've been warned, and as always there is cake at the end so make yourself a cup of tea and take cover. It's not just that I'm ranty, I'm relatively pissed off and generally annoyed -- at people who blame others for their mistakes or don't take … [Read more...]
Singapore Chilli Crab deja vu
Remember how I said I was going to work my way through drafts and archives? This is one of those, originally posted back in 2011 only to be re-made and photographed in March of last year -- which of course means I want to go through the whole dance again for better photos... —— It is spicy and messy in the best way possible. It takes ages to eat due to the process of picking the meat from the shells. It should be served on a newspaper-covered table while wearing clothes that are easy to … [Read more...]
Lamington Fudge Bites – Vegan and Soy-Free
My 3rd blogiversary (in early November) passed before I realised it had arrived. I let Thanksgiving slide by without a mention or a single pumpkin recipe. I managed to outdo myself in December -- with no less than three truffle recipes, two cookies, a pie, an ice cream bombe and some spiced syrup -- but the other day another milestone crept quietly past. I only remembered the day after, while sitting at lunch with a client no less, that I had arrived in Australia 12 years ago intending to … [Read more...]
Mushroom & Quinoa Vegan Meatballs with a Rustic Pasta Sauce
There aren't many things better than a big pot of meatballs and sauce to feed a crowd. Prepared in advance and called on as needed they are at once terribly simply and extraordinarily versatile. Growing up, meatballs and stuffed shells were our standard Thanksgiving Eve meal. A simmering pot was ready and waiting for family who rolled into Philly at all hours of the day and evening, and anything remaining came out to sit alongside the Thanksgiving leftovers for Friday lunch. My mother … [Read more...]
In My Kitchen: January 2014
Oh dear, it's again been quite a while since I've linked up with Celia for an In My Kitchen post so this is a big one. I may as well get started right away... ----- Kitchen shenanigans The original caption on this pic said it all: Getting back to basics - no computer or finances or real estate or real life. Just eggs, flour and bare hands kneading away the day. It was rolled and cut by hand because I couldn't be bothered with the pasta machine. Then topped with a simple pasta sauce … [Read more...]
