Yep, I went to San Diego to attend a blogger conference. Blogher 11 to be exact. I went to a blogger conference armed with a notepad and a pen instead of a computer. I Tweeted only when connected to the patchy wi-fi. I went knowing [actually knowing, rather than just occasionally interacting online with] exactly zero people - and let me note that I am not a very good 'walk up and introduce myself' kind of person ... once I know you, I'll talk your ear off and willingly share an enormous … [Read more...]
Hell for leather straight to the tacos
Have I ever mentioned that we travel to eat? Of course, of course, also for culture, and to see friends, and experience new things, but really, the food comes first, waaaay first. First cab off the rank for this trip was San Diego. After a 14 hour flight into LAX [it's not THAT bad, 2 movies, 5 or so hours sleep, another movie with breakfast and there we are, on the ground before we left, pesky international date line and all] we hopped into a car to drive straight to Ocean Beach for Fish … [Read more...]
And then it all changed.
In the blink of an eye. And the world was smaller, and we were all that little bit more vulnerable. 10 years ago I was woken up by my roommate running down the hallway and banging on my door. He had just seen the second plane hit on the morning news. It was 7am in Denver. Hours later he would comment how he stayed in the hotel between the towers only months earlier, a brief flash of mortality by an immortal Peter Pan. A few years after and he was gone in the blink of an eye too. That day … [Read more...]
‘Round the world in 35 days
I may not have been entirely honest with you. Well, not honest exactly, but maybe open ... I certainly haven't shared what I have been up to lately. If you follow on Twitter you may have noticed mentions or pics of places about as far from Sydney as possible over the past few weeks ... yep, we have most definitely been on the road again. Quite a few months back the itchy feet kicked in and luckily there was a conference I wanted to attend in San Diego and a family get together in New York to … [Read more...]
Pancake Face
So when I was young, my grandmother used to bribe me to go to church with her. ‘Come on, ammoninni, [pronounced ‘ah-MO-ni-ni’ and possibly spelled ‘amuninni’ it means ‘Let’s go’ in the Sicilian dialect of Italian, but we always thought it was ‘Hurry up’. It got said A-LOT] it’s Sunday, lets go to church and I’ll take you to IHOP afterward for breakfast, you can get anyyyyything you want.’ and off we would go. I remember sitting there for the hour or so and wondering what on earth required … [Read more...]
No-Knead Bread
Don't make this bread. I only say this because I am looking out for you, it is so good I can't stop. I have made it every weekend for the past three weeks - all in the name of testing of course ... Here's the thing, it is a total double edged sword, you are only actively 'making the bread' for about 15-20 minutes ... but it takes a day and a half or so of patience waiting around for it to do it's thing. This is not a 'quick bread' but it is quite possibly the least labour intensive one I've … [Read more...]
Chicken Cacciatore
This gets filed under the 'meals from childhood' category. I vividly remember mom making this in an electric fry pan - you know, the kind with the high sides and a domed lid - for dinner quite regularly. I have no idea if this is the same recipe, when I decided to cook it the other evening for RJ it was the middle of the night in NY, probably best that I didn't call to ask what goes in it! But that said, this is the recipe of my memories - tomatoes, multi-coloured capsicum [peppers], … [Read more...]
