Back in 2010, well before the 'I Quit Sugar' craze took hold, we cut the sweet stuff out of our diet. It was part of a larger change in how we eat and in one fell swoop we cleaned out the cupboards and went cold turkey. (If you're interested, you can read all about it here). The first few weeks were challenging to say the least but the results were remarkable. I've learned a bit over the past few years, now use rice syrup instead of apple juice concentrate amongst other things, and while I'm … [Read more...]
Raw Banana Cream Pie & Whipped Coconut Cream
The full royal moniker of this creation is Raw Vegan Macadamia & Coconut Banana Cream Pie, but in the interest of daily conversation, a shortened version was necessary for public appearances. Yeah, I just compared Price William Arthur Philip Louis Windsor - aka Wills - to a Banana Cream Pie, it happens. And honestly, this luscious creation should be the future king of Pie-land, so it works. In any case, few months back I discovered that Banana Cream Pie is apparently the favourite … [Read more...]
Corn, Zucchini & Saltbush Fritters
Can someone please tell me how on earth we ended up a week into May, remind me what day it is, hire a cleaning lady and get me a cup of tea? I've been racing like a maniac to finish the artwork for the MCA Zine Fair so things may stay a bit quiet around these parts for a little while but we all still need to eat. A while back I shared a pic of the goodie bag from an event I attended. Creating this recipe not only gave me an opportunity to use the saltbush leaves but I finally worked … [Read more...]
Roasted Tomatillo Salsa Verde
Of the things I miss most from America-land, proper Mexican food is pretty close to the top of the list. I crave the staff lunches made by the Mexican woman who was a prep chef in a Denver restaurant where I waited tables. The dark, 20+ ingredient mole poblano, the spicy rice, the salsas, the fresh vegetables, the hot tortillas. It was fresh and clean and filling. My eyes glaze over when I think about the road-side shops in Mexico where a $1.50 fish taco comes out of the kitchen as a … [Read more...]
Seasonal Sunday Lunch launch!
I am so excited to officially share my newest project with you. I've been hinting here and there, talking in low tones and whispers, but I've never been too good at using my inside-voice for extended periods of time. So without any further ado, you're invited to lunch! Seasonal Sunday Lunch is an international grass-roots movement that aims to raise awareness of seasonal produce and encourage mindful seasonal eating in the simplest, most enticing way: by gathering friends and family for a … [Read more...]
Basil & Walnut Pesto
She unconsciously hummed along with the music playing in the background, humm de dum de da. It was from Milan she explained, as a smile triggered by an ancient memory flitted across her face. The heavy wooden chopping board belonged to her mother, the cleaver had been borrowed from my mother and the basil was picked just moments before from her own garden. Ro was chopping up herbs for pesto, again, it was the third time in two weeks. My grandmother still makes her pesto the old way. … [Read more...]
Goat Milk, Honey & Plum Swirl Ice Cream – and an interview with Canberra Urban Honey
I've been thinking about goat milk ice cream for over two years. Really. Back in 2011 just before we left for a five week around the world trip I stumbled upon a launch announcement for a little soft-serve shop that had popped up in the West Village. "So what?", I hear you say, "there are a thousand soft-serve ice cream places in NYC, what makes this one any different?" Well, its claim to fame was that it used goat milk for its ice cream, and having been off cow dairy - and by … [Read more...]
