If you've never brined a turkey before roasting now is the time to start. No, no, not next year, now -- or at the very least the next time you cook anything remotely turkey related. Because once you do you'll never go back, seriously. Ok, ok, how can I be so sure? Well only a few weeks ago I was you, well not really you, that would be impossible and a little awkward, but the non-brine-er part of you who is questioning my blatant confidence. You see for years I'd intended to try this … [Read more...]
Lemon, Macadamia & Coconut Raw Truffles
Round about 5 years ago, give or take a few days, 84th & 3rd was born. It happened -- without buildup, without fanfare, without a repository of content, without thousands of Instagram followers, but with a single post that told a short story about my life at that very moment. To say the blogging landscape has changed exponentially in the past 5 years (much less the past 10 or 15) is an understatement. New blogs are launched these days with events to rival book releases, with build up … [Read more...]
Pumpkin Granola
J: can you please write a post about pumpkin granola for me? R: granola, it's good J: yeah, need a bit more than that R: ... J: ... R: I don't really like granola J: I'm not talking to you anymore. The pumpkin obsession continues, this time in the form of granola -- because while I'm perfectly fine with eating pie for breakfast some people may feel granola is more appropriate. I'd call those people silly but to each their own. At this point I should probably try to draw a … [Read more...]
Vegan Chocolate Smoothie Bowl
One day in late June... J: I just want to run away from it all R: . . . R: *raises eyebrow* J: oh, with you of course R: so when should we leave? Sometimes, in lieu of an immediate departure from the daily grind, chocolate for breakfast is the only solution. No judgement if you make it again and call it dessert. … [Read more...]
Pineapple & Kiwi Green Smoothie and Prep.Prop.Style.Shoot Snapshots from Breakfast
When a chef, one who runs a holiday property in the country none the less, emails to ask if you want to come down to Tasmania to teach a two-day food photography and styling workshop, the only possible answer is yes. When she mentions that she'll do all the cooking, talks about stringing fairy lights through the trees for dinner and sends you photos of a possible picnic location at the end of a pier you know it's meant to be. And so it was that I found myself, a mere month after that … [Read more...]
Creamy Vegan Asparagus Soup
Not only is my brain currently as fried as the eggs I've been photographing lately, but each time this little corner of the internets has caught my eye I've avoided its accusing glare, brewed a fresh cup of tea and settled in for yet another late night. We're on the precipitance of a reasonably last minute holiday -- provided I don't disintegrate into a pile of burnt toast crumbs before we board the plane to NYC -- but it's been far too long since a new recipe has graced these pages and it's … [Read more...]
Roasted Tomato & Tuna Pasta
I've realised recently (or perhaps I've been aware of it for quite a while, ahem) that I rarely share recipes for actual meals here. Cakes and cookies are well represented as are sides and sauces and things made with bourbon, but it seems -- other than an occasional sandwich which totally counts as a complete meal -- that brunch is about as close as I get to full blown, serve to guests or family members for dinner, dishes. Given, most things I eat during the day are fridge surprise bowls, … [Read more...]
