A letter to my Mom on Mother's Day 2015. Hi Mommy! I miss you. You remember a few weeks back when we were in the midst of one of our usual slightly-random-but-filled-with-pretty-things conversations and you said "I've been feeling like you're really far away lately"? Well something caught in my throat because I'd been thinking the same thing only a day earlier, even though we talk all the time. Of course those calls are great but it's the telepathy across the world moments that make … [Read more...]
Vegan Spelt Anzac Biscuits
Yes, a recipe for Anzac Biscuits, over a week after Anzac Day has come and gone. A recipe that while perfectly edible (and highly enjoyable if I do say so myself) isn't quite right, quite yet -- but I'm posting it anyway because: sometimes not perfect is still ok, and edible but not quite right, quite yet, is an extraordinarily accurate description of the current state of this here site, at this here moment... More about the site shortly, but first the biscuits. You may want to grab … [Read more...]
Chocolate Granola
Sometimes you just have to go with your gut. Like the day I landed on Food.Baby.Life, my assigned blog for March Secret Recipe Club, and the first post on the first page was for a grain-free chocolate granola. And that granola called out to me so loudly that I didn't want to go any further. But I did, because it's the responsible thing to do, and I'm so glad I dug a bit deeper... I discovered that Susan -- a mum to three little ones under five who is also studying Naturopathy -- is … [Read more...]
Vegan Cream Cheese Frosting (or Cheesecake Frosting, if you insist)
I've done it again haven't I? Teased you with a cake and promised frosting, then made you wait a week for the recipe. I had every intention on sharing this a few days ago, but then another cake happened. It happens. There is every chance this icing recipe may look a bit familiar, perhaps a bit like Vegan Cheesecake... But what is Cream Cheese Frosting if not cheesecake spread over cake -- am I right? In any case don't question it, just make it. Then try not to eat it all … [Read more...]
Coconut, Ricotta & Cornmeal Tea Cake
This must be one of the easiest cakes I've ever made ... Or at least it would have been, had the morning not been a comedy of errors. First up the butter I was melting in the oven (no I don't have a microwave) tipped and spilled as I went to get it out. Interesting upside is that melted butter apparently makes a great cleaner when wiped off the bottom of a hot oven. Who knew. Of course my oven now smells like butter every time it's turned on. Then I completely forgot to put said butter … [Read more...]
Gluten Free Carrot Cake
Hum, it appears any hope of stringing words together in a cohesive sentence has once again left me. I'm blaming it on seemingly never ending days of prep > style > shoot > repeat, occasionally punctuated by sort > sort again > edit > send. Not that I'm complaining -- far from it -- but it seems that spending all day every day in front of a stove and a camera has turned my brain to mush for little other than faffing. In a stand against the mush I've decided it's … [Read more...]
Chocolate Tahini Spread (aka Nut-free Not-tella)
Do you know what today is? It's World Nutella Day! Let's all cheer and get hopped up on sugar and palm oil! Wait, that isn't right... is it? Please indulge me for a moment as we hop into the time-machine -- help yourself to a cup of tea or a shot of bourbon and remember to buckle your seatbelt as we flash-back to my original anti-Nutella post three years ago: ... On the World Nutella Day site the founders claim: Nutella is more than just a “chocolaty hazelnut spread,” it is a way of … [Read more...]
