No rants or long stories today, just an "I could totally make this myself" recipe inspired by a stunning jar of marinated goat cheese. The cheese, along with copious cups of tea and a plate of fruit and veggies, eased the pain of a Sunday afternoon brainstorming session one weekend a couple months back. A few weeks later -- when the meeting location moved to my living room for a photo shoot -- I figured it was only fitting I work out a way to replicate the tangy, herb-infused … [Read more...]
Sweet Potato Stout Quick Bread
If this is your first time here you may be better served heading over to look at popsicles or brownies and coming back another day... It's been an, interesting, few weeks on a few different fronts and I'm feeling a bit ranty. Still around? Well you've been warned, and as always there is cake at the end so make yourself a cup of tea and take cover. It's not just that I'm ranty, I'm relatively pissed off and generally annoyed -- at people who blame others for their mistakes or don't take … [Read more...]
Three Williams Cafe – Redfern, Sydney
Expansive polished concrete floors play off the exposed pipes, painted brick walls and a blackboard-backed kiddie area. A mix and match of wood, marble and metal tables and chairs provide an air of casual nonchalance. The servers and baristas, dressed in faded black with pants rolled above the ankle, are Redfern gentrification at its finest. With its Facebook-only website and little more out front than a copper 'W' plaque next to the door to indicate its existence, Three Williams … [Read more...]
Green, Sardine & Quinoa Breakfast Bowl
This isn't a real recipe. Or really a real post. It is however how I eat on most days. A few things thrown into a pan, wilted or crisped as appropriate. Tipped into a bowl and topped with a bit of fish or an egg. Drizzled with some (generally hot) sauce. Eaten at the dining table because that's where my computer sits. Eating well doesn't have to be complicated, really. … [Read more...]
Cucumber Salad & a Scandinavian Inspired Brunch Spread
One evening last week, well after midnight if I'm to be honest, I started writing a story inspired by this salad. Or perhaps, more accurately, this salad brought back memories of the Scandinavia portion of our trip a few years back. However life (social and otherwise) reared its head once again and somewhere between working out how to make my computer see the images from my new camera (sigh) and juggling meetings and plans of world domination (only half kidding) the story was put on hold. It … [Read more...]
Fig and Black Olive Tapenade
A friend tweeted me a week or so ago asking if I had a recipe for Fig and Olive Tapenade. I didn't, but to say it peaked my interest would be an understatement. She was looking for a recipe as, thanks to a full roll call of allergies, it is one of the only things she can add to a cheese platter and actually eat. As you can imagine she was sick of paying through the nose for tiny jars. This month's cheese-themed Sweet Adventures Blog Hop was the perfect reason to put my recipe … [Read more...]
Baked Ricotta Cheesecake with Fig & Strawberry Compote
This story begins and ends with me eating cake for breakfast so, if you get worried along the way, be safe in the knowledge that everything will be ok. On cheesecake and fat If you are going to eat cheesecake just accept that it should be full fat. You can try to mess with it, go low-fat, but honestly ... why bother? It's cheesecake. I'm not going to get into the pro/con argument over fat, there are plenty of people leading that particular charge just fine on their own, but keep in mind … [Read more...]
