Things and stuff and more things Thursday is being brought to you this week by Saturday. Thursday was busy with Stove-top Mac-n-Cheese. It happens. Anyway, here's some stuff I came across 'round the interwebz traps this week... Starting as always with the food: This is a really good resource [via Sarah Wilson] on the amount of fructose in various fruits, why this is important, and what too much fructose will do to your health. I've been a bit guilty lately on relying mainly on apples in … [Read more...]
Surprising Stove-top Mac-n-Cheese
Sometimes we all need a mini-break. A chance to juggle one less ball for a change. To take a deep breath - or perhaps two. Even people who sit at home and eat bon-bons and go out to posh lunches and afternoon shopping dates may need to take a break sometimes, you know, for a spa day or some such equally relaxing activity - FYI, if you're one of those people, call me, I'll be happy to help you out. Christina from The Hungry Australian is one of those crazy-busy, always-on-the-go people - … [Read more...]
Eggnog Royal Icing
Let's get this out of the way up front. The bourbon is out, again. It's Christmas, it happens, embrace it. Also, for someone who doesn't really eat sugar, there have been an enormous number of desserts making an appearance here - and I haven't posted a single savory recipe in ages. We'll get there, one day. But for now - Sugar.And.Bourbon masquerading as Eggnog Royal Icing. Now I don't generally decorate Gingerbread Cookies. When we were younger they got slathered with icing and all sorts … [Read more...]
To the D to the C to the W-A-S-H…oh never mind
I bet you forgot all about the fact that I was recapping a big'ol trip, didn't you - not particularly surprising as we left San Diego headed for DC back in October and then, well, what can I say, it was a really loooong flight. But look! Here we are, on the ground and the adventure continues... Over the next few trip posts there will definitely be a hotel decorated in red and cow hide with statement pink lamps [not even joking] and 2 afternoon lunches at the same a DC institution [oysters, … [Read more...]
America-land Chocolate Pudding
You wouldn't think that Chocolate Pudding was a term that needed clarification, but alas it does. Ordering Chocolate Pudding in 'lands of the Queen's rule' will bring to your table a decadent piece of cake - generally with a delicious sauce over the top, or as a molten pool in the middle, or created in the bottom of the baking dish. Now there is nothing wrong with this kind of Pudding - as a matter of fact, there are very many things right with it... but it's ultimately cake and not remotely … [Read more...]
Pumpkin Pie Perfection
Pumpkin Pie does wonders for seasonally induced home-sickness. Don't laugh, it's a valid northern-hemisphere-displaced-persons affliction. It occurs in June -- when it gets cold and you keep hoping the Christmas lights will appear, and then again in November -- when you go to the beach on the weekends and see Christmas lights on the way home. With Thanksgiving only a few days away, it has kicked into high gear. ~~~ We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming for a special … [Read more...]
Bits and pieces – San Diego
While in San Diego on our recent trip there were a few other things we got up to along the way ... Warning: stream of consciousness ahead, proceed with caution... A quick shout out to the sales guy at the camera store where I picked up a new lens for my camera - I had emailed to make sure they had the Nikon 35mm 1.8 AF-S and LowePro Passport Sling in stock, and when I popped in to pick them up he said 'I like your blog, I sent the link to my sister, she is always looking for good gluten … [Read more...]
