Blogging is an interesting beast. It is a person sitting in front of a computer expressing things in pictures and words, terribly solitary from the outside peering in... or so you'd think. But when you look a bit closer you realise that many of those people sitting at their computers have formed little communities. Sometimes online, sometimes in person, generally with people they never would have met otherwise, and it really doesn't matter how the community works or where it came from but simply … [Read more...]

Summer Cantaloupe, Cucumber & Mint Green Juice
I once had a boss who gave a hard time to anyone answering the question "how are you?" with the word "busy". It didn't stop any of us from defaulting to it anyway, but it did make you think about how often it is offered up as a reply or an excuse. Why? Are we all looking for sympathy? Or acknowledgement? Or is it simply easier than any of the alternatives answers? Who knows. But lately I've been head-down-bum-up, had lots of bits-and-pieces-on-the-go, lots of balls-in-the-air... You get … [Read more...]
Watermelon & Cucumber Salad with Tahini, Coconut & Lime Dressing
Oh summer, please don't go. You've been nothing but a tease, an irritating teenager, and a raging lunatic for the past two years, but I keep hoping for a reasonable turn. Is it too much to ask for blue sky, reasonable beach temperatures and low humidity on a regular basis? But I must admit, even through the hotter-than-an-oven days and the rain and the indecision, I still love you more than winter. While the weather in Sydney has been schizophrenic at best this summer, the fruit has … [Read more...]
Basil & Walnut Pesto
She unconsciously hummed along with the music playing in the background, humm de dum de da. It was from Milan she explained, as a smile triggered by an ancient memory flitted across her face. The heavy wooden chopping board belonged to her mother, the cleaver had been borrowed from my mother and the basil was picked just moments before from her own garden. Ro was chopping up herbs for pesto, again, it was the third time in two weeks. My grandmother still makes her pesto the old way. … [Read more...]
100+ alternatives to PB&J
Whether you grew up eating peanut butter & grape jelly every day at school or have never tried the combination, the concept of pairing fruit and nuts is a classic one. But what if you don't eat peanuts - or can't send them to school with your child? What if you're off refined sugar - or live somewhere that doesn't have grape jelly? What if you simply want a change? You're in luck, as there are endless ways to combine seed or nut butters with fruit or fruit spreads - and while … [Read more...]
Fig, Fetta, Tahini & Thyme – an Almost Recipe
I don't create recipes the same way I post them. I think in arrows and chicken scratch and abbreviations. I have to make sure I write down oven temps and final cooking times and recipe titles or I'd end up with a pile of papers containing a list of ingredients and little else. But some things just don't need proper recipes or quantities or detailed instructions. A quick photo, a few simple ingredients and maybe a note or two will suffice. As I regularly post dishes on Facebook via … [Read more...]
Late night snack
So even without a drink between the two of us, after a night out for a mate's 30th, all we wanted was pizza [do you see a recurring theme yet...no, just wait, it will happen again soon I'm sure]. 2 issues with that - 1: not allowed real pizza [white flour and cows cheese amongst other things] - and more importantly 2: you try getting decent pizza in Sydney after 11pm. I love a good quick slap-up - even if it meant making polite conversation with the slightly creepy late night register guy at … [Read more...]
