I had never eaten a Rice Paper Roll before moving to Sydney, for that matter I had never eaten Pawpaw or Papaya before going to the Cook Islands. It's not that I grew up sheltered, it's just that I grew up in the suburbs of America-land in the 80's and 90's - Chinese Food and Pizza was about as international as our town got back then... One of the first places RJ ever took me to eat was a brilliant little Asian hole-in-the-wall in Marrickville called Old Thanh Huong. That original visit … [Read more...]
Perfect Apple Crumble Pie
I love Pie, it's as simple as that. Crust I can take or leave - unless it's chocolate or graham cracker and attached to Cheesecake but that is another dream for another day - but Pie filling, yes please. Custard, cream, fruit, whatever, they're all fair game. Needless to say, I was quite happy when we chose 'Sweet as Pie' for our June Sweet Adventures Blog Hop. I'm not sure if you remember my Crazy Pink Pie from a few months back but shortly after making that one I went even more out … [Read more...]
Custard Apple, Lime & Mint Mojito Sorbet
In Sydney, winter is officially here, and it is cold. Sleeping in jumpers, two blankets on the bed, heater on in the lounge room, cold. Last night the city nearly blew away. It is Custard Apple season - it is not ice cream season. In America-land, summer is just beginning and ice cream abounds. It is ice cream season - it not Custard Apple season. This recipe is fair to no one, it is however delicious and as such I am sitting on the lounge, covered in a blanket and next to the heater, … [Read more...]
Hartsyard Seed & Feed – Newtown, Sydney
There's a new kid on the block in Newtown. A warm welcoming space, it has enough rustic wood and homestead touches to make it cozy, enough industrial metal and geometric textured artwork to make it chic, and a menu that will have you planning a return visit just to try all the things you didn't order first time around. Hartsyard Seed & Feed is at first impression exactly as described on their site 'An inner-city homestead built for comfort and conversation'. Warm and inviting, it's a … [Read more...]
Custard Apple Ice-Pops
I knew that I was receiving some Custard Apples - what I didn't expect was a box of four enormous, perfect ones. I was so excited when they arrived that I unwrapped them, grabbed one out, and discovered that they were as hard as rocks. Damn. But it made sense, as a perfectly ripe Custard Apple would need to be used immediately... and I needed to think about it for a while. So I set them aside on the kitchen bench, lid of the box jauntily perched but not on tight, and promptly forgot about … [Read more...]
Vegan Chai ‘Buttercream’ Icing
When I decided to make Macha Green Tea Cupcakes for this month's Sweet Adventures Blog Hop I was at a loss on what to frost them with. The cupcakes themselves are pretty healthy - enough so to be perfectly acceptable for breakfast - and I didn't want to ruin a good thing with mounds of sugar and butter. Who am I kidding, I'll eat any cake for breakfast but these are just that little bit more justifiable... I considered chocolate for a while as a topping but thought it may overwhelm the … [Read more...]
Matcha Green Tea Cupcakes – or Maccha. As you were.
Welcome to the May Sweet Adventures Blog Hop, our theme this month - 'What's your cup of Tea?' - meant that I got to create a recipe using one of my favourite things - Tea. It was only logical that my creation included another of my favourite things - Cake! Can you believe that we've been at this #SABH thing for 7 months now? Wow. And thanks in advance for joining us for this most recent adventure - I'm honoured to be hosting again and we have a special surprise this month too... The … [Read more...]
