So when I was young, my grandmother used to bribe me to go to church with her. ‘Come on, ammoninni, [pronounced ‘ah-MO-ni-ni’ and possibly spelled ‘amuninni’ it means ‘Let’s go’ in the Sicilian dialect of Italian, but we always thought it was ‘Hurry up’. It got said A-LOT] it’s Sunday, lets go to church and I’ll take you to IHOP afterward for breakfast, you can get anyyyyything you want.’ and off we would go. I remember sitting there for the hour or so and wondering what on earth required … [Read more...]
Chicken Cacciatore
This gets filed under the 'meals from childhood' category. I vividly remember mom making this in an electric fry pan - you know, the kind with the high sides and a domed lid - for dinner quite regularly. I have no idea if this is the same recipe, when I decided to cook it the other evening for RJ it was the middle of the night in NY, probably best that I didn't call to ask what goes in it! But that said, this is the recipe of my memories - tomatoes, multi-coloured capsicum [peppers], … [Read more...]
Fire roasted tomato sauce
So I like pasta shaped like stuff other than pasta – no, not THAT kind, get your head out of the gutter! This kind: Pasta shaped like Swedish elk heads – could you resist?? They also tend to look like angels or crabs depending on the angle and current mindset of the observer. Even better they are wholemeal and organic….you’d never guess they are from Ikea…huh? Really, hence the nationality of the elk. But more to the point...they quickly made friends with a bag of organic plum … [Read more...]
Ribbon Salad with Port Vinaigrette
As promised, this is the accompaniment to the White Fish Burgers posted yesterday. There is just something fun about vegetables in the shape of ribbons, don't you agree? They look complicated and fancy but are in fact easier than chopping everything up, especially if you have a thick peeler. Woohoo, par-tee [bit excited about veggies aren't I...] The Port Vinaigrette a really nice, slightly different dressing...if I do say so myself - it makes way more than you need for the … [Read more...]
Spelt Plum Cake
So when we started the detox my first concern [obviously] was how I could make cake that we are ‘allowed’ to eat. This was followed very soon after by how I could make pizza happen but that we'll get to later. I have determined that I love the thought of cake as much as cake itself. It’s in part due to the texture – the dense, rich, comforting wonderfulness that you just can’t get from anything else. No it’s not a carb craving [toast with almond spread solves that], or a sweet craving [piece of … [Read more...]
Spicy Chili Sauce
Something red and spicy for Valentine's Day - Chili Sauce! I love chili in all its forms so it is fitting that this is my first recipe post. I am on a bit of a tear trying to find ways to replace things we eat [or used to eat] with alternatives that taste great and are a bit healthier [no preservatives/chemicals etc]. This one was hugely successful. The traditional stuff is fabulous...on raw oysters, grilled chicken, Asian greens, eggs, whatever….love it. But it is a full of a bit of … [Read more...]
