My 3rd blogiversary (in early November) passed before I realised it had arrived. I let Thanksgiving slide by without a mention or a single pumpkin recipe. I managed to outdo myself in December -- with no less than three truffle recipes, two cookies, a pie, an ice cream bombe and some spiced syrup -- but the other day another milestone crept quietly past. I only remembered the day after, while sitting at lunch with a client no less, that I had arrived in Australia 12 years ago intending to … [Read more...]
Mushroom & Quinoa Vegan Meatballs with a Rustic Pasta Sauce
There aren't many things better than a big pot of meatballs and sauce to feed a crowd. Prepared in advance and called on as needed they are at once terribly simply and extraordinarily versatile. Growing up, meatballs and stuffed shells were our standard Thanksgiving Eve meal. A simmering pot was ready and waiting for family who rolled into Philly at all hours of the day and evening, and anything remaining came out to sit alongside the Thanksgiving leftovers for Friday lunch. My mother … [Read more...]
Three Williams Cafe – Redfern, Sydney
Expansive polished concrete floors play off the exposed pipes, painted brick walls and a blackboard-backed kiddie area. A mix and match of wood, marble and metal tables and chairs provide an air of casual nonchalance. The servers and baristas, dressed in faded black with pants rolled above the ankle, are Redfern gentrification at its finest. With its Facebook-only website and little more out front than a copper 'W' plaque next to the door to indicate its existence, Three Williams … [Read more...]
In My Kitchen: January 2014
Oh dear, it's again been quite a while since I've linked up with Celia for an In My Kitchen post so this is a big one. Just eggs, flour and bare hands kneading away the day. It was rolled and cut by hand because I couldn't be bothered with the pasta machine. Then topped with a simple pasta sauce … [Read more...]

DIY Christmas Ornaments and a very Merry Christmas to all!
You know those things that have been on your list for years before you finally get around to them? Yep, this is one of mine. Ornaments made one day last week when I should have been doing other things but, because creative distraction gene, I did this instead. A meditative break from a mountain of work, spent rolling and pressing and smoothing and cutting. Making pretty things just because I could. These DIY ornaments are impossibly easy though, so there really is no excuse. First, … [Read more...]
13 Holiday Gift Ideas for 2013
Christmas is almost here and other than a few things gifted throughout the year and a bit of a retail-therapy present to myself today, neither RJ nor I have done a single bit of holiday shopping. Whoops. We do however have a few things in mind for each other and, while Christmas morning may be a bit sparse, we'll be making up for it with the post-Christmas sales. In the meantime I figured I'd share some ideas on the off chance you are in the same boat. --------- 1. The Kinfolk Table … [Read more...]
