My husband has this thing about breakfast. He has to eat something that by his definition is breakfast-y, before diving into anything remotely lunch related. Even on days when we laze in bed until the clock shows double digits and don't make it to a cafe until well after mid-day, he always orders eggs or another Western-style breakfast food. In the same vein, breakfast for dinner was a difficult sell for many years too -- although these days French Toast and various egg creations appear more … [Read more...]

Roasted Banana, Coconut & Oat Bars
Last week I did a juice cleanse -- three days of low-fruit veggie juices, three days of no solid food, three days of realising how much I actually enjoy the act of eating and subsequently miss it. I'll share more about it one day but this post is not about that cleanse... It's about the homemade granola bars I made on the second day of said cleanse and photographed on the third day -- in between launching a website for a client and packing for 5 days in Adelaide -- without taking a single, … [Read more...]
Hot Cross Bun French Toast & Mixed Fruit Compote
The sentiment of this recipe (and for that matter this post) hovers between "why not?" and "well of course I did, are you really surprised?". Hot Cross Buns -- with all their soft and fluffy filled with spice and love glory -- are best on the day, or day after, they are pulled from the oven. Not that they taste any less brilliant beyond that point, but like any homemade bread they need something to refresh them slightly. Toasting and smearing with curd or butter certainly … [Read more...]
Sticky Date & Chai Hot Cross Buns
It's been a bit busy on the work front, and subsequently a bit quiet around here lately, but I couldn't let Easter pass without yet another Hot Cross Bun recipe. Spiked with chai tea and plenty of spices, the dates are kneaded into the dough creating swirls throughout the soft, just-sweet buns. Simple and a bit moody (the day, the buns and the styling), they gave me the perfect excuse to pull out my new crafty, DIY tiled background. Half of these went to work with RJ, the other half … [Read more...]
Smoked Salmon Breakfast Pizza
It was morning and I was hungry. Hungry for breakfast but craving pizza. Porridge -- my usual go-to -- just wouldn't suffice, and honestly who am I to deny a pizza craving. The smokey-sweet Whisky Cured Smoked Salmon from my #huonsalmon order was waving at me from the fridge -- sitting just under the Salmon Caviar, next to the dill left over from the salmon reuben adventure, and on the shelf above the all-the-green-things pesto. RJ was at the grocery store already and a quick call … [Read more...]
Blackened Salmon Reuben with Yoghurt Dill Sauce
This is that sandwich, the one you've been waiting for. The one that is as comfortable at a brunch soiree as it is at lunch or dinner. The one that is a little bit rich, a little bit tangy, a little bit crisp, a little bit creamy. The one that guys want to be and girls want to be with. What? I love a good sandwich and this one ticks all the boxes. A sandwich wasn't however the first thing that came to mind when I was offered the opportunity to try out some of the Huon … [Read more...]
