I have no story to tell today. My head is full, but full of lists and need-to-dos and must-dos and should-dos. The lists squeeze the stories into a tiny room with little light and a window that seems to be painted shut. The stories bang on the door every now and then, demanding attention. I appease them with tea and cookies. I'm hoping I can appease you with the same. These cookies have been percolating in my head every since they were suggested by Jackie B over on this post as … [Read more...]
In My Kitchen: August 2013 (The Quarterly Edition if you will…)
Oh dear it's been a long time since I've done one of these posts. I've been thinking about it each month then the days come and go and well, here it is, en masse if you will. March/April was the last wrap up so this is a snapshot of mid-April up until today. Off we go into a few months of stuff, organised into only slightly random categories that make sense in my head, to link up with Celia's August 'In My Kitchen'. Cookbooks Some made by me, some by others, some may appear as review posts. … [Read more...]
Gluten Free Quinoa Cornbread
I've been a touch quiet 'round internet-land these past few weeks but there's been lots happening in the background... A few Dining Out posts, a few events, and a whole lot of design / editing / food photography for a new extremely fast turn around project has meant that this is not only the first recipe post in two weeks but the first thing I've cooked and photographed for my own purposes since those Almond Croissant Makeover treats. Phew. Of course that meant I not only tackled one … [Read more...]
Almond Croissants – the makeover edition
I once read in a book that there is no such thing as a coincidence. The story went that when something or someone repeatedly crossed your path there was a cosmic reason behind it. The author continued on to explain that you should not just dismiss these occurrences as coincidence, but actively pursue them to determine how it could change the path of your life. Of course the people in this book, if I remember correctly, could also see energy and eventually crossed into another astral … [Read more...]
Wholegrain Fruit & Oat Bars
The air wafting out of a Crabtree & Evelyn store transports me to my grandmother's bathroom, all monogrammed hand towels and tall shell-filled glass jars. The smell of fresh baked bread, the house I grew up in on a lazy Sunday afternoon. And the scent of Drakkar Noir lingering in a hallway, straight back to 7th grade and boys who wore Metallica t-shirts... ahem. The connection of smell and memory is well documented but taste can have exactly the same effect on me, spinning my mind into … [Read more...]
Crunchy French Toast
His magical words fought through the fog of my groggy travel brain, "I found a place for brunch, they are famous for something called Crunchy French Toast, you should probably get up..." It was the last morning of our huge adventure holiday and at the end of that day was a 14-hour flight home, followed by a return to real life, a hard look at what I wanted to do with myself, and a taco/ice cream/pie belly to shed if my jeans were to ever fit again. Brunch sounded like the perfect … [Read more...]
Vegetarian Black Bean Chili
I've been part of the Secret Recipe Club for a couple months now and one thing I'm really enjoying, aside from discovering new blogs, is actually making the things I find instead of simply filing them away for later. What a novel concept. I get inspiration for recipes everywhere I look, and I'm constantly pinning things to make one day, but SRC has meant that at least once a month I make a new dish from a new blog. This month I was assigned to Fried Ice and Donut Holes. A passionate … [Read more...]
