Have I ever mentioned that we travel to eat? Of course, of course, also for culture, and to see friends, and experience new things, but really, the food comes first, waaaay first.
First cab off the rank for this trip was San Diego. After a 14 hour flight into LAX [it’s not THAT bad, 2 movies, 5 or so hours sleep, another movie with breakfast and there we are, on the ground before we left, pesky international date line and all]
we hopped into a car to drive straight to Ocean Beach for Fish Tacos. No stop at the hotel first, no proper settling in pleasantries, just right to the food.
On our last trip to SD, The South Beach Bar and Grill was recommended to us by a friend for the best Fish Tacos around [open to debate as long as it involves something to try next visit] and they were indeed delicious. However this time they were out of Mahi Mahi.
Did you hear that?… [OUT OF MAHI MAHI, I HAVE BEEN ON A PLANE FOR 14 HOURS AND YOU ARE OUT OF MAHI MAHI] … ummm, we’ll have the Whaoo thanks, and perhaps some Shrimp and Lobster too, oh and a dozen oysters. Maybe a slight over-commit, but you have to get rid of that airplane food memory somehow.
Now don’t get me wrong it was fresh and lovely, but not the best this time, not the Mahi Mahi. The oysters on the other hand were cold briny deliciousness – squeeze of lemon, dollop of hot sauce, down the hatch. Please disregard the blurriness, RJ was not feeling particularly patient about my happy snaps this afternoon as it was keeping him from the food, time was not on my side.
If you ever manage a visit, Ocean Beach also has the added draw of Antique Stores, hours of mazes of Antique Stores, some with the best vintage Pyrex assortments I have ever seen, be still my heart. As this was the first day of 35, the luggage was already pushing the limits a touch and since last visit I dragged a nested set of 4 pieces with lids across the country and back again, I didn’t even trust myself to walk on the same side of the street much less go inside, travesty.
The farmer’s markets on the other hand, California in summer … all immediately edible and therefore not requiring any suitcase space. White Nectarines and Strawberries later we were back in the car on our way to settle in for a few days.
Oh, right, not before a picture of LLAMAS! just for the hell of it. Welcome to America-land.
