Ah, shimmery childhood memories. You know the ones, they dance and glisten around the edges, things are bigger - because you were smaller, and brighter - as memories can be, and you're never quite sure how much truth exists in the memory versus how much is stacked and stitched-on from photos and stories told around long ago late night boardgames. I have a shimmery, wispy childhood memory of a pool with a mermaid on the bottom, it was in the basement of a house at the edge of a cherry … [Read more...]
Mushroom & Lentil Burgers – Vegan, Gluten Free
It's fine, don't worry about me, I'll just have salad and bread... It's a phrase known well by many non-meat eaters when faced with a weekend BBQ in Australia. Barbequing here generally consists of steaks, sausages, a bit more steak, another sausage, and maybe some chops. No, we don't generally 'throw another shrimp on the barbie' [and even if we did we'd call them prawns and they'd probably still have the heads on] and while there is always a pile of white bread or rolls and perhaps some … [Read more...]
Crab Scrambled Eggs
It is no secret how much I adore brunch. And as there is no better way to start a new day than with a slightly indulgent plate of eggs, it stands to reason there is no better way to start a new year than in the same manner! I stumbled across the Alaskan Crab Co at an industry trade-show-style event a few months back - tasted the crab, tasted the caviar, picked up a card - and promptly forgot all about it. Then the other day, during a post Christmas shopping fit, RJ and I were making our way … [Read more...]
Rhubarb & Apple Spread. Or it is curd… or perhaps jam. No probably not jam, not really curd either…
One bunch of rhubarb well past its prime languished in my crisper. A few unsightly end of season apples picked up from the organic food store sat forlornly on the bench top. Cooking them down was the only option I could see. I haven't had much luck baking with rhubarb in the past. As a compote it works just fine but baked into anything it just never has any taste to me. Once I used it with with coconut and pear and produced a cake loaf that was so awful even toasting couldn't save … [Read more...]
Chocolate Spice Cookies for the Mayan Apocalypse
He looked up at the sky every night like generations before him had, observing, charting, measuring, but tonight was different. Tonight there was a star that appeared to be coming to earth. He had seen shooting stars before, but this time it was controlled, almost as if someone was piloting the star like a ship... Some say the great knowledge of the Mayans came from time travelers or extra terrestrials. How else could could an ancient culture know so much? How could they pinpoint the length … [Read more...]
Gluten Free Spiced Quinoa Pie Crust
I've mentioned it before, recipe ideas come to me from all sorts of places. Sometimes it's a meal, or a supermarket product or even a movie that sparks a new creation, but other times it's as simple as a 'have you tried...?' inquiry or an 'I wish I could figure out how to...' request. A month or so ago a reader named Elisa P emailed saying she loved my Chocolate Quinoa Pie Crust but was wondering if I had ever tried one without the cocoa. I had considered the same thing myself, but this was … [Read more...]
Vegan Pumpkin Pie and a Celebrated Life
A celebration. A celebration of life no matter how brief. A celebration of life because the alternative is a contemplation of loss and the extraordinary sadness that accompanies it. Five years ago on this day, a special soul left our family and this earth. She was 19. An artist, a musician, a budding chef, a daughter, a sister, a cousin, a friend. There wasn't a funeral, instead a Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life. We had only just moved back to Sydney weeks earlier but there was no … [Read more...]
