It's cold. Last week was like November in Philly - grey, wet and really really cold [so, low of 11 degrees...just above 50...but cold is relative but I don't do cold, especially wet cold]. The weather has sent me into a comfort food spiral of soups, breads and hearty winter vegetables. The other night as I was rummaging through the crisper and decided I HAD TO HAVE Braised Red Cabbage. This is a pretty quick recipe. None of that bake for 2 hours stuff going on here. It keeps a bit of … [Read more...]
Garlic Greens
So the Cavalo Nero from yesterday...this is how it most frequently makes an appearance...sauteed with garlic and olive oil, usually at least twice a week. Like spinach, it cooks down by at least half - if not more, so cut up at a minimum an entire bunch. It goes with everything, or even on it's own. It is currently filling my NEED VEGETABLES cravings, and we have exterminated the vampires for miles based on the amount of garlic we are going through. If you can't find Tuscan Cabbage, … [Read more...]
Talking about the weather, sort of, not really
So we have been on this 'started out as detox / became a way of eating every day / lost a stack of weight without really trying' diet thing for over 6 months now...and although it hasn't really done what it was supposed to do I am now really little [horizontally now too rather than just vertically] for the first time in my life and it has really just become a healthy way of life more than a diet but now it is winter... ...and all I want to do is bake and eat loaves and loaves of bread with … [Read more...]
Cavalo Nero
Cavalo Nero aka Tuscan Cabbage is one of my new 'use as often as possible' ingredients. I figured I'd show you what it is before adding it to almost everything. There are a few other things going on here as well. For starters this is my DIY wooden board, secondly this was photographed with my new lens - had big aperture happening so the bokeh is a touch out of control but you get the idea. This stuff is fantastic. It almost melts down when sauteed lightly and wilts instantly in … [Read more...]
And we’re roll’n, roll’n…
Do you own a rolling pin? I haven't had a real one since I left home for college. Back then I didn't ever bake unless I was home for holidays and more recently, considering that we have lived in at least 7 places in the past 6 years [not including the other 6 or so places where we were house-sitting or staying with friends at various points], I couldn't be bothered to have something else to pack up each time. Especially when a wine bottle makes a perfect substitution... ...and can be … [Read more...]
My present to you…
...well actually it was my present to me - a new 50mm 1.4 AF-S lens for my Nikon. but hey, a better lens means not only more sanity for me when shooting in low light [kitchen at 9pm + overhead bulb = crappy light + no tripod = blah], but better pics for the blog. And therefore better reading for you! [yep, I'm just as good at justifying new shoes.] You will start to see better [hopefully!] pics mixed in until all the recipes in the wings have been posted - that said I of course want … [Read more...]
Someone else making the cake
After a day of lovely text messages and phone calls, rousing [making up in volume what it was lacking slightly in tune] renditions of the song of the day and a surprise cake at work, I finished off my birthday with a very thoughtful gift and a wonderful dinner compliments of my gorgeous husband..... Warned the waiter in advance that I may photograph everything [blur complements of an old iPhone]...RJ's worried that this may be my new favourite restaurant. Bistro Moncur - The taste buds are … [Read more...]
