Things and stuff and more things…Saturday

January 14, 2012 By JJ 4 Comments

Things and stuff and more things Thursday is being brought to you this week by Saturday. Thursday was busy with Stove-top Mac-n-Cheese. It happens. Anyway, here’s some stuff I came across ’round the interwebz traps this week…

Starting as always with the food:

  • This is a really good resource [via Sarah Wilson] on the amount of fructose in various fruits, why this is important, and what too much fructose will do to your health. I’ve been a bit guilty lately on relying mainly on apples in the morning, rather than the berries I used to eat with my breakfast, time to swap back! The levels shown in bananas surprised me however, as I expected them to be higher in all types of sugar. I wish I could find a breakdown list like this for sugar substitutes [honey, agave, coconut sugar, maple syrup etc] as well. A quick side note, it is worth reading Sarah Wilson’s ‘Why sugar makes you fat‘ post, which is a really quick summary about why our bodies aren’t programed to tell us to stop eating fructose.
  • So remember back when only crunchy-granola-sandal-wearing-long-haired-hippies bothered with organic produce? Yeah, well now it’s hip. But with hip comes the masses, and with the masses comes dollar signs for big business, and with dollar signs comes mass production. Organic is now in vogue… so what? Well it’s just that the same convenience and on-demand availability as conventional foods is expected, make that demanded, with organic produce. So rather than the traditional support for the little farmer and being good for the environment and sustainable for the earth values of organic farming, it’s about how can we produce as much as possible as quickly as possible as cheaply as possible. How long will we be able to sustain it?
  • Ok, I’m off my sugar-free organic soap box now! And I fully appreciate the irony of telling you about this next item in the same post, much less the same section, as the previous links but really, check out this ice cream sandwich dessert truck menu from Coolhaus. Unbelievable. On the list for the next trip to NYC – no questions asked.

Tech and computer machines:

  • Last week was ‘be nice on the Internet week‘ as proclaimed by Real Simple Magazine. Missed it? Then be nice this week. Go on, you can do it.
  • When I was in middle school we had a computer that I had to enter MS-Dos commands into in order to get it to start up. Yes, really. This is what computers acted like before some people I work with were born. Brilliant time waster. No, clicking on any of the buttons will not make your computer re-start.
  • Are you always behind on what everyone is laughing or talking about ’round the water cooler? You know what I mean – the latest cat video or no-pants subway ride or other random meme? Good thing Mashable has people that spend their days finding all this stuff for you and creating ‘Hilarious Viral Topics Trending Right Now‘ lists.
  • With a touch more irony, I came across this next item during the aforementioned ‘be nice of the internet week’…  but really, people are ridiculous sometimes and just need to be called out.

Rant [you know, because there hasn’t been any of that yet, ahem]

  • Would you run a marathon without training at least a little bit, I don’t think so. Would you get in the ring with a professional boxer and expect not to get knocked out, probably not. Then don’t twist your body into crazy positions just because celebrities with professional trainers and yogis with years – nay decades – of experience make it look easy and then complain that you get hurt doing it. This article makes me angry. I’ll get over it in yoga tomorrow.

Love youz all till next Thursday!

Interesting post, thanks for sharing! I need to investigate the sugar in fruit, as my daughter was recently diagnosed with intolerance to fructose. Perhaps that why I feel so tired a lot of the time!

No worries Lizzy – I’ve only just learned about fructose intolerance (don’t have it thank goodness), but cutting down benefits everyone really!

Some serious food for thought here. I am certainly going to check out Sarah Wilsons post, it is something that I have become concerned with lately.

I took this video on Jan 1. I even wrote a caption I took this video on Jan 1. I even wrote a caption and everything. And I intended to post it that day as a reflection moving into a new year. But instead, mom and I went out for pizza and wine, and then it was Jan 2, and so on and so on.
🌀
So instead you’re getting it on Feb 1. A new day and another new month (but what is a new month or a new year, other than a societal convention really).
☀️
Because, each day, each sunrise, we have the opportunity to start anew - no matter how big or little that start may be. A chance to take another step forward - no matter how many steps back you feel you’re fighting against.
🌀
Whether this past year brought blinding joy or paralysing grief (and in whatever measure of balance or imbalance), I hope each new day sees the landscape of your life look one step closer to what you imagine it to be. And that when the waves roll in and change that landscape, you can roll with it and see the beauty and possibility on the other side.
🌊
If you’ve made it this far, congratulations, have a cookie 🍪 And I’ll leave you with the rolling waves and blue sky of a California beach in January. I truly hope this year sees us all grow stronger and move forward with each new day. Going backwards is simply not an option.

When the middle little insisted on buying quail eggs over Christmas, but due to allll the other food we never cooked them, I simply couldn’t let the little guys go to waste.
🥚
Could I have made one dish? Of course. Did I instead prepare quail eggs four ways, bake mini loaves of brioche, make mini waffles, dig through the prop closet for the smallest dishes, and set up an entire table? Of course I did.

Swipe to the end for reference on the size of the eggs and loaf.

My go-to pizza topping combo 🍕 Made on that dou My go-to pizza topping combo 🍕 Made on that dough from a couple weeks ago and voiced by the middle little (who is about as different from her younger sister as you can get!) 💥.
🍕
Sometimes this combo gets prawns too 🍤. Most of the time I don’t bother mixing the ingredients in a bowl and just layer them on top. The cheese is a hard goat cheese (because I can’t do 🐄). The ‘spices’ 🌱 is Sicilian oregano. The measurements are random at best - a handful of this, a splash of that.
🍕
If you have a fave veggie or seafood pizza combo I’d love to hear it. Because as Ms.S says, voila, yummy yummy pizza!
