Crave Sydney

October 30, 2011 By JJ 3 Comments

Crave is a month long food festival in Sydney with literally hundred of events and participating restaurants and, well, food. This year we haven’t taken nearly enough advantage of it – although I did do a fair amount of drooling over the Tweets and pictures of other food bloggers at the launch parties and the World Chef Showcase.

We did however manage to make it to the Sydney Growers Market in Pyrmont one morning, and stop into Bitton on a Saturday afternoon for brunch to enjoy …

Brunch at Bitton

a beautiful omelet with roasted pumpkin and goat’s cheese [um and about 3 sticks of butter, no comment], sourdough, salad, and spicy tomato sauce; french crepes with berry jam …

and a complimentary Bitton Gourmet product [haven’t tried it yet, will let you know how it goes, but sounds delicious!]

Then this morning I saw on the Twitter that the Sydney Food and Wine Fair was on in Hyde Park, and since we haven’t been spending our Saturdays in the bowels of hell lately [translation: taking a break from house hunting – it hasn’t stopped because we have found anything but because we have all but given up, last time this happened we moved to NY … ] we didn’t have any plans and headed over the bridge.

Sydney Food & Wine Fair

The fair is an initiative by The AIDS Trust of Australia and it’s is in its 21st year.  The vendors there pretty much donate the food and time and labour for the fund raiser, and goodness is there some good food.

We traded our tickets for BBQ Ocean Trout with Peas, Quinoa and Horseradish Creme Fraiche from Cafe Sydney …

Vahlrona Chocolate and Date Tart with Rose Petal Syrup from Catalina …

Catalina - Chocolate Torte

and Pane Casereccio – Italian bread filled with roasted vegetables, olives and basil pesto from Brasserie Bread

Yes, we were balancing shared paper plates on our laps while sitting on a park bench, but for that few moments … died and gone to heaven is an understatement – The bread, including the huge chunk we still have sitting on the benchtop currently, was morrish; the rose petal syrup was divine [like want to put it on everything divine]; the chocolate incredibly decadent; and the trout, well, it was perfect.

And so I’ll leave you with a quick peek at the QVB High Tea stand and the first blooms of the Jacaranda – only around for a few weeks in October and November when it turns Sydney purple from head to toe.

Hungry yet?

FYI, have decided I may finally need to upgrade from an IPhone3 [maybe it’s a 3S, who knows] simply for a better camera – yikes!

~~~
Yeah, not a guest of anyone, remotely compensated or asked to visit any of the events or stands mentioned, but next year … hey Crave – pick me, pick me! *waves*
