A few months back we made the brilliant decision to move out of our (renting-been-there-far-too-long-greedy-landlady-tried-to-raise-the-rent-again-an-enormous-amount) apartment prior to heading off on an 8-week adventure. The combination of downsizing eight years of stuff, packing all my work and craft things, moving it all into storage and packing for the aforementioned holiday nearly broke us, however it also meant I came up with some pretty interesting ways to use all the things in the … [Read more...]
Okonomiyaki Stuffed Sweet Potato
Let's be honest, I could eat sweet potatoes nearly every day. I could also (and usually do) put bonito flakes on almost anything. And these sautéed Brussels sprouts? Don't even get me started... We'll get back to the stuffed sweet potato version in a moment, but for those who aren't aware, Okonomiyaki is a Japanese pancake -- a savoury one, and more akin to huge fritter if we're being properly descriptive. It's found all over Japan and, not surprisingly, interpreted differently depending on … [Read more...]
No-Knead Hot Cross Buns
Every so often I think that I'd like to be one of those people who post relevant, seasonal, festive recipes for every imaginable holiday... Then reality and life set in and I get over it pretty quickly (haha). But amazingly I've managed to post a hot cross bun recipe every year, except for the first, since I started this little corner of the internet. 2012 kicked off the Easter parade with Sour Cherry, Orange and Earl Grey Hot Cross Buns. 2013 and 2014 were two of my faves with … [Read more...]
Summer Sangria Popsicles (plus a Virgin Sangria option)
I always used to smirk at those "10 things to do with leftover wine" lists, because who ever has leftover wine? But I somehow became that person who rarely drinks more than one glass in a go, and all of a sudden if a bottle of wine was opened there was almost always a couple of glasses left over. Then one day I horrified a girlfriend (who is a brand manger for a wine company, so rightfully horrified by bad wine habits) by sharing that I was known to re-cap and refrigerate said open bottle … [Read more...]
Macadamia, Kale & Blueberry Salad
I recently became that woman who looks like an idiot walking in high heels. The one I usually roll my eyes at while muttering under my breath about how people really should learn to walk in heels, or alter their footwear choices. But I used to wear towering shoes of every description, so how ever did this happen?! Well it turns out that walking in heels is not at all like riding a bike. Huh. You see, back in my corporate days, heels were a regular part of my wardrobe. There is, even … [Read more...]
Vegan Spelt Pie Crust
Five years ago (good lord where does the time go) I posted a recipe for Whole Spelt Pie Crust. After making said crust for every year since I figured it was high time for a bit of an update. Over time, I've worked out that coconut oil is better for this crust when it's a touch firmer, so there's a bit of extra detail about how to get it right when it's hot in your kitchen. I've found adding some extra water is better too -- and I've refined the refrigerate and roll times because … [Read more...]
Carrot & Zucchini Muesli Bowl
I started you off slowly with rainbow purees in porridge then moved on to a green as it gets smoothie with sweet, sweet potato gems but now it's time to go straight from the crisper to the table -- are you ready? There's almost no prep required for the veg in this bowl meaning you're up and out in no time at all. Now you may get a few side-glances from partners or workmates but feel free to give them a smug smile and continue eating your breakfast in peace. Confidence is a terribly … [Read more...]
