What to say, what to say, on this the last day of a very long yet very short, and slightly tumultuous, year... There will be no 2014 trend predictions or big wrap up posts today. No tomes or photo montages dedicated to the most popular recipes this year (Raw Banana Cream Pie, Gluten Free Almond Pie Crust and French Butter Pastry battled it out with Mushroom & Lentil Burgers, Roasted Tomatillo Salsa Verde and that good old Spicy Carrot, Tomato and Lentil Soup standby if you really want to … [Read more...]
Goat Milk, Honey & Plum Swirl Ice Cream – and an interview with Canberra Urban Honey
I've been thinking about goat milk ice cream for over two years. Really. Back in 2011 just before we left for a five week around the world trip I stumbled upon a launch announcement for a little soft-serve shop that had popped up in the West Village. "So what?", I hear you say, "there are a thousand soft-serve ice cream places in NYC, what makes this one any different?" Well, its claim to fame was that it used goat milk for its ice cream, and having been off cow dairy - and by … [Read more...]
To the D to the C to the W-A-S-H…oh never mind
I bet you forgot all about the fact that I was recapping a big'ol trip, didn't you - not particularly surprising as we left San Diego headed for DC back in October and then, well, what can I say, it was a really loooong flight. But look! Here we are, on the ground and the adventure continues... Over the next few trip posts there will definitely be a hotel decorated in red and cow hide with statement pink lamps [not even joking] and 2 afternoon lunches at the same a DC institution [oysters, … [Read more...]
Quinoa Tortillas
You know when you try something out expecting one result and what you get is so much better? Yeah, these are that. I noticed recently that Bob's Red Mill has started ranging in Australia - I was excited to say the least. FYI - they have nothing to do with this post, I just really like their stuff ... that said, if they sent me a hamper, I wouldn't say no, what I would do is giggle like a kid at Christmas. I get excited about baking supplies, it doesn't take much. Anyway, while I already have my … [Read more...]
Bits and pieces – San Diego
While in San Diego on our recent trip there were a few other things we got up to along the way ... Warning: stream of consciousness ahead, proceed with caution... A quick shout out to the sales guy at the camera store where I picked up a new lens for my camera - I had emailed to make sure they had the Nikon 35mm 1.8 AF-S and LowePro Passport Sling in stock, and when I popped in to pick them up he said 'I like your blog, I sent the link to my sister, she is always looking for good gluten … [Read more...]
Pumpkin Pie Pancakes
It is officially autumn in America-land. The seasons are changing, Halloween is full steam ahead there are pumpkin recipes everywhere. Sydney on the other hand has not yet woken up to the fact that it should be getting warmer here, and although it is now light until after 7pm [thank you daylight savings] it still feels more like winter than spring. All of these things combined, along with the promise I made to continue the 'brunch we never had' and the fact that shortly the trip recap will … [Read more...]
Hotel Indigo – San Diego
We have been known to go on 'reasonably' well planned trips having booked no accommodation other than perhaps the first city on the itinerary. In America-land this is not too much of a big deal as pretty much any small town you drive into will have a minimum of 4 chain hotels, all only metres apart, all for around $75 per night including free wi-fi ... there is a very good chance that we spent two weeks driving down the west coast in this manner a few years back. In Europe it is feasible to … [Read more...]
