The first rule of gatherings is 'always promise food', even better if you are promising cake. You know it's true - book clubs, catch-ups, training sessions and even dreaded Friday afternoon meetings are made better with the anticipation of treats. However once your audience is there what do you do with them? The casual catch up is an easy one, get out the food early, brew the tea and simply kick-back with friends, but when there is a agenda things need to be approached a bit … [Read more...]
Gluten Free Cheezy Rosemary & Black Pepper Crackers
I just thought it would be best to warn you up front, these are spectacular. Crunchy, salty, cheesy, savoury, addictive. I'm one of those people who is usually quite satisfied with a small handful of chips or a single spoonful of ice cream or one slice of cake but with these crackers all bets are off. I'm not even kidding. It's the last Monday of the month and therefore time once again for a Secret Recipe Club post. This month I was assigned the lovely blog Fearless Homemaker, and talk about … [Read more...]
Genius Goat Chevre Icing
I've gone all mad-scientist-ish on you again. Not with fruits or veggies or nuts this time around, but instead with an aim to re-create one of my favourite ever icings without processed cow cheese or refined sugar. When it comes to dessert I'd be hard pressed to name a favourite. Mom's Sour Cream Chocolate Cake with ridiculously fudge-y Chocolate Icing does hold a special place in my heart and a stunning Lemon Meringue or Pumpkin Pie can completely silence me for the length of time it takes … [Read more...]
Fresh Apple Cake
If angels wore perfume it would smell like this cake. It is possible I'm being dramatic again, but it is equally as possible the scent of it baking will make you want to sit next to the oven, fork in hand, in order to eat it bite by bite straight from the pan while fending off advances of anyone who dare ask for a taste. When I chose 'Seasonal Produce' as the theme for this month's Sweet Adventures Blog Hop this delightful creation was the first thing that came to mind to make the … [Read more...]
Vegan Chocolate Fudge, PLUS 11 flavour twists
Chocolate always wins. It really isn't fair to everything else - the noodle soups, the sides, the dips, the salads - always take second at best. Poor fried rice, you can come to my house any day. Ok, so what am I on about? You see, I have an enormous backlog of posts... While I do enjoy the picture editing and post writing, I'd rather create and cook and photograph over anything else, and as I'm at home during the day most of my meals get styled and propped before being eaten. So over the … [Read more...]
French Butter Pastry – or the flakiest, strangest, most genius pie crust you’ll ever make
I fear I've been a little, flaky, lately. I'm trying to keep up appearances but somewhere among all the sauces and drinks and sugar laden treats round these parts I feel a touch lost. My Berry Filled Hot Cross Buns were a redemption of sorts but I look at all the unpublished, healthy meals sitting on my computer and in my camera and simply sigh. In addition to the usual juggling act there is quite a big project I've been working on and a few other things that will hopefully come through … [Read more...]
Chocolate Caramel Tart – slightly drunken, utterly decadent, perfection
It is rare that I make things this brilliantly evil, I'm usually much more restrained, but when one is going to a cheese and wine party one has no other option than to pull out all the stops. This is not a Chocolate Tart with Caramel, it is not a Caramel Tart topped with Chocolate, it is what happens when Chocolate and Caramel meet at a party one night, get a bit tipsy and have a love child. Meet Chocolate Caramel. Drunken Chocolate Carmel to be exact. Now if you've been around here … [Read more...]
