Tradition is a funny thing. It can be as old as time itself -- steeped in mystery and history with little known about how it started, or it can be shiny and new -- just starting to form. Eventually the traditions all mingle, some fading away, some becoming stronger, depending on the situation and people involved. Christmas tradition for my family always started with a long Christmas Eve-day drive as we headed over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house. Yes, seriously. Santa … [Read more...]
Perfect Peach Pie
Hundreds of butterflies flitted in and out of sight like short-lived punctuation marks in a stream of consciousness without beginning or end. -- Haruki Murakami, 1Q84 I'm particularly particular about pie. Especially fruit pie. It should be made using fresh fruit, nothing pre-packed or pre-mixed, nothing from a can, nothing labeled with the word 'filling'. It should be sweet, but not too sweet. Syrupy due to juiced released, not fillers added. Spiced, bubbly, impossibly … [Read more...]
Zucchini Zoodles with Poached Trout
"Darling, can you please get the basil?" Scotty quips with a twinkle in his eye. Luke pretends he doesn't hear the request, continuing to banter with the captive audience and add to his growing army of cacao and coconut haystacks. When pressed again Luke claims that he has no idea where the missing basil -- or the refrigerator it may be hidden in -- is instead handing Scott a spoonful of the chocolate mixture and changing the subject. Scott and Luke are as lovely as they are lovely … [Read more...]

Gumtree Garden – The Rocks, Sydney (feeding my design addiction)
If there were more hours in the day what would you like to do? Of course there are the obvious answers -- spend more time with family, cure hunger, create world peace (I'm so Miss Universe material) -- but those aside what would hobby would you take up? What skill would you learn just for yourself? It should come as no surprise that I'm an extremely visual person and, although food is my first love, I have a secret, burning passion for design. I would love to be able to take a room and … [Read more...]
Strawberry, Cucumber & Coconut Water Slushy
A dose of refreshment on a hot day, a dose of sunshine on a rainy day -- this frosty drink is as appropriate post-yoga as it is post-beach. Another thing I've decided to do as part of my sticking with what works approach is to finally dig out recipes and pics from the past year or so that haven't made it into posts yet. This was shot -- ironically enough almost a year ago to the day -- using stunningly sweet new season berries and coconut water from a young coconut. I froze the fresh … [Read more...]
Vegan Chocolate Magic Shell & Halloween Green Goo Magic Shell
Seriously? How cool is magic shell? It starts all liquid-y then BAM it's frozen and shatter-y the minute it hits anything frozen. The stuff from the grocery store has all sorts of crap in it of course, but you can make it at home with just two (or three) pantry staples. As these two versions were used to coat Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream Bars (stay tuned for the recipe tomorrow!) I left them un-sweetened and the slightly bitter edge paired brilliantly with the ice cream, but if you … [Read more...]
