Hello there. In a fit of late-night brain-freeze I'm vignetting this, barely editing, and going to bed. Better buckle up. ------ On tenuous links... I'm hosting Sweet Adventures Blog Hop this month and with the hop starting on 17 March I simply had to make the theme St. Paddy's Day related. However, other than the festive green colour of this pie, any relation to the holiday, country of origin, or leprechauns at the end of rainbows are tenuous at best (and quite possibly … [Read more...]
Vegan Lemon Custard Cheesecake Bars {GF VG DF SF}
We weren't a family that had sweets on-hand very often. Cereal couldn't have sugar as either of the first two ingredients listed; cookies and ice cream did not make regular appearances; dessert after dinner wasn't really a feature. But when there were sweets, we went all out -- perhaps that's why desserts from my childhood are captured so vividly in my memory. The usual suspects of Pumpkin Pie and cookies through the holiday season. Piping hot triangle-shaped doughnuts on Thanksgiving … [Read more...]
Singapore Chilli Crab deja vu
Remember how I said I was going to work my way through drafts and archives? This is one of those, originally posted back in 2011 only to be re-made and photographed in March of last year -- which of course means I want to go through the whole dance again for better photos... —— It is spicy and messy in the best way possible. It takes ages to eat due to the process of picking the meat from the shells. It should be served on a newspaper-covered table while wearing clothes that are easy to … [Read more...]
Ooey-Gooey Gluten-Free Brownies
I could have called these the best gluten free brownies, ever; or perhaps secret ingredient brownies; or maybe even compost brownies; but ooey-gooey was simply too good a description to pass up. SEO be damned. These brownies, of course, have a touch of mad-science inspiration driving them forward ... but first a bit of background. Remember when I won that juicer a few months ago? Well RJ and I have been taking full advantage of summer fruit and veggies for juicing, but each time we'd … [Read more...]
Lamington Fudge Bites – Vegan and Soy-Free
My 3rd blogiversary (in early November) passed before I realised it had arrived. I let Thanksgiving slide by without a mention or a single pumpkin recipe. I managed to outdo myself in December -- with no less than three truffle recipes, two cookies, a pie, an ice cream bombe and some spiced syrup -- but the other day another milestone crept quietly past. I only remembered the day after, while sitting at lunch with a client no less, that I had arrived in Australia 12 years ago intending to … [Read more...]
Raw Ginger Chocolate Truffles
What to say, what to say, on this the last day of a very long yet very short, and slightly tumultuous, year... There will be no 2014 trend predictions or big wrap up posts today. No tomes or photo montages dedicated to the most popular recipes this year (Raw Banana Cream Pie, Gluten Free Almond Pie Crust and French Butter Pastry battled it out with Mushroom & Lentil Burgers, Roasted Tomatillo Salsa Verde and that good old Spicy Carrot, Tomato and Lentil Soup standby if you really want to … [Read more...]
Gingerbread Biscotti – Coconut Caramel Gingerbread Biscotti to be exact
The coconut caramel wasn't burnt, per say, but it was well past the colour it needed to be to make light tan kaya jam, and it had to be light tan. So into a jar it went and into the refrigerator to be worried about another day. A new batch of caramel was made for the kaya, which in turn was made into bread pudding for photos, and all was well with the world. But that jar of caramel kept staring at me each time I opened the fridge. It knew darn well that it was only moments away from the bin, … [Read more...]
