Huh, well it seems that between a Pumpkin Upside-Down Cake last week and a twist on Egg-Nog this week I've unintentionally set the scene for Christmas in July. How terribly festive of me (or more appropriately what a terribly appropriate response to my perpetual complaining about how cold I am...). Maybe I should have convinced RJ to let me leave the tree up for another month. So how did I come to make a concoction named Apple-Nog (or Not-Egg-Nog as I've been affectionately calling it) … [Read more...]
Pear, Macadamia & Coconut Baked Oatmeal
It's no secret that I'm a bit of a porridge fan. I've been known to eat it for dinner as often as I do for breakfast -- because anytime is a good time for porridge if you ask me. RJ however won't touch it with a ten-foot pole, well not in the cook-on-the-stove-eat-with-a-spoon form at least... However, I've just discovered that if I bake it into a cake-like slice, all bets are off. How very sneaky convenient. I stumbled across this fragrant pan of inspiration over on Rebekah's blog, … [Read more...]
Banana Split Hot Cross Buns
I'd been thinking about Hot Cross Buns for weeks. It happens every Easter, so it wasn't a surprise really, however this year it was Chocolate Hot Cross Buns that were hopping through my mind like a hyperactive bunny. But everyone and their mother has made Chocolate Hot Cross Buns and the bunny got bored with my lack of creativity, then hand on hip it tapped its foot and whistled and refused to make eye contact. And so it was, as it hopped off on another lap of my brain, that the wheels … [Read more...]
Chocolate Granola
Sometimes you just have to go with your gut. Like the day I landed on Food.Baby.Life, my assigned blog for March Secret Recipe Club, and the first post on the first page was for a grain-free chocolate granola. And that granola called out to me so loudly that I didn't want to go any further. But I did, because it's the responsible thing to do, and I'm so glad I dug a bit deeper... I discovered that Susan -- a mum to three little ones under five who is also studying Naturopathy -- is … [Read more...]
Broccoli & Parmesan Pasta
I probably should have called this Green & Gold Pasta and pretended that it was entirely planned in advance for Australia Day. But you and I both know you'd see straight through that one -- and besides when I plan posts for Australia day they always involve lamingtons -- ha! So why, if not for Australia Day, did I make unintentional green and gold pasta you ask? Well for Secret Recipe Club of course. This month I received the blog Couscous & Consciousness as my assignment and … [Read more...]
Maple Orange Spice Macadamia Nuts
There is only one word to describe these spice-coated macadamia nuts -- addictive. Addictive as in keep tasting them just to make sure they're ok, and make twice what you need, and you better stop now lest you have none to give away addictive. They are crunchy and fragrant and stunningly easy to make -- as a matter of fact the hardest part of the whole recipe is waiting for them to cool before eating. These orange spiced macadamias are the second gift I included in my foodie … [Read more...]
Macadamia & Coconut Choc-Cherry Truffle Bites
Truffle bite? What's a truffle bite? Things are truffles or bites, right? And truffles are rarely more than a bite anyway so calling something a truffle bite is like calling a cat a kitty cat or saying something is an end result or even better (worse?) declaring that you're going to an ATM machine. I'll wait while you google what ATM stands for, swear to never again use the phrase "mix together", and re-evaluate the sheer scale of redundancies in everyday life... Ok, so maybe a truffle … [Read more...]
