We go out for brunch quite a bit. If you haven't worked it out yet, it is easily my favourite meal of the day. My preferred lazy Saturday afternoon cafe has amazing vegetarian baked beans, and I get them probably 80% of the time. When perusing the Turkish Flavours cookbook I happened on this Turkish Baked Beans recipe and knew it would be one of the items I'd make as part of our testing the cookbook feast. Have you entered the giveaway yet? If you can believe it I'd never cooked with … [Read more...]
Zucchini Fritters from Turkish Flavours
Happy St Paddy's Day, Internets! In honour of the day everyone becomes a little bit Irish - or if you live in most places along the eastern seaboard of America-land everyone becomes a lot bit Irish - I present to you a recipe from a Turkish cookbook. Wait, that doesn't sound quite right. I present to you brilliant green fritters that just so happen to come from a Turkish cookbook. That's a bit better. St Paddy's Day is a pretty important day to me - especially this year - but more on that … [Read more...]
Surprising Stove-top Mac-n-Cheese
Sometimes we all need a mini-break. A chance to juggle one less ball for a change. To take a deep breath - or perhaps two. Even people who sit at home and eat bon-bons and go out to posh lunches and afternoon shopping dates may need to take a break sometimes, you know, for a spa day or some such equally relaxing activity - FYI, if you're one of those people, call me, I'll be happy to help you out. Christina from The Hungry Australian is one of those crazy-busy, always-on-the-go people - … [Read more...]
Fresh Fish Tacos
These little beauties are what happen when you combine happy accident Quinoa Tortillas and Mango Salsa and a few other fresh bits and pieces for an inspired summer-y meal. I've previously shared the extent we went to for fish tacos in San Diego... these are better, if I do say so myself. Added bonus - no need to drive anywhere, you can have them in your very own home. ~~~ Fish Tacos Ingredients: 300g [2/3 lbs] white fish fillets - no bones or skin. 1/4 c … [Read more...]
Quinoa Tortillas
You know when you try something out expecting one result and what you get is so much better? Yeah, these are that. I noticed recently that Bob's Red Mill has started ranging in Australia - I was excited to say the least. FYI - they have nothing to do with this post, I just really like their stuff ... that said, if they sent me a hamper, I wouldn't say no, what I would do is giggle like a kid at Christmas. I get excited about baking supplies, it doesn't take much. Anyway, while I already have my … [Read more...]
Spicy Carrot, Tomato and Lentil Soup
I love soup. I know, it's a big statement. There is this little cafe downstairs from my day-job office. They are friendly, and they make a good cup of tea and they have soup at lunch....$8.50 soup. It does come with lovely bread, but really, $8.50? It is not any more expensive, and is actually at times cheaper, than any of the other cafes around. This soup was inspired by one of their regular ones, and it is so simple I have made it twice already. As much as I used to call North … [Read more...]
Best Wholewheat Bread
So somewhere in the middle of my veggie kick I finally gave into temptation and found some time to bake this bread…and then I almost passed out. This stuff smells so good. The first time I made it I really just wanted fresh bread for dinner. We were out of our usual [organic, no chemicals, no soy, sourdough] loaf which is nice but still just grocery story sandwich bread, I was a bit over wraps and we're trying to avoid loose rolls from the supermarket. Not to mention that once you're … [Read more...]
