One bunch of rhubarb well past its prime languished in my crisper. A few unsightly end of season apples picked up from the organic food store sat forlornly on the bench top. Cooking them down was the only option I could see. I haven't had much luck baking with rhubarb in the past. As a compote it works just fine but baked into anything it just never has any taste to me. Once I used it with with coconut and pear and produced a cake loaf that was so awful even toasting couldn't save … [Read more...]

Cinnamon Cauliflower Coffee Cake & Caramel Sauce
Since we got back from our adventure I have been on a much needed clean-eating kick. If you were following along at any point you know we were quite literally consuming everything in our path as we made our way around The America's for almost three months - and it wrapped-up for me with a gluttonous weekend at EDB2012. Back in my own kitchen I gravitated immediately to the quinoa, brown rice, kale and eggs. It's how I prefer to eat, honestly, and a bit of ingenuity makes for some pretty tasty … [Read more...]

Guacamole & Pico de Gallo – Afternoon Tea, Mexico-style
Having only just settled into our breathtaking room after roughly 8 hours of travelling we were surprised buy a knock at the door ... "Hola, buenos tardes - guacamole, salsa fresca, corn chips and cerveza for you. Welcome to Capella Pedregal." We stripped off our travelling clothes, grabbed the first swimsuits we could find, slipped into our balcony-plunge-infinity-pool and cracked open the beers. Bliss. Back home I eat avocado every day, however RJ has insisted for years he doesn't … [Read more...]
Custard Apple Lassi
Remember all those Custard Apples I got a while back? Well I'm working through the alarmingly decreasing supply in my freezer and this is the latest incarnation. Lassis are traditionally made from mango, but pairing the luscious custard apple flesh with cardamom and yogurt was one of the first things that came to mind, so I went with it. The fruit purees much like mango - creamy and sweet - so it just made sense. Because I like really thick smoothies I used the fruit frozen rather than … [Read more...]
Honey-Pistachio Granola | Guest Post
As you read this RJ and I are practicing our extraordinarily poor Spanish on the unsuspecting population of Buenos Aires, and in a few days will be setting off to hike the Inca Trail. Conveniently, Katherine Martinelli is here with a gorgeous granola to keep you well fed! I've admired Katherine's blog for ages and regularly link-up in her weekly blog hops. We had hoped to meet in person in NYC this year during both our trips home but schedules didn't quite synch-up. So instead, she's here to … [Read more...]
