It arrived on my doorstep like a gift from the heavens. An overflowing box of seasonal produce, celebrating the start of summer fruit and veg and saving me from myself. As soon as it hit the table I unpacked every piece -- and then did what any slightly OCD normal, possibly colour-obsessed, person would do... I created a rainbow of course. I didn't realise until it was all packed away again that the fennel should have been turned the other way and now that's all I see when I look at … [Read more...]
Quick-Pickle Marinated Mushrooms
Ah summer, a time of relaxation and recharge, of taking it easy and.... *insert movie-esque sound of screeching brakes* Ok, let's try that again. Ah summer, a time that should be all about relaxation and recharge but it seems life pays little attention to the seasons or the temperature or the shade of blue blanketing the sky, and simply keeps heaping on the demands. Summer, at least here in Australia, is nearly more manic than the rest of the year. While we should be swapping indoor … [Read more...]
Pecan Oat No-Bake Pie Crust {GF VG DF SF Paleo}
Look at me go, no posts for ages then bam, there I am in your inbox or reader or feed two days in a row. Pie will do that. Of course another Pumpkin Pie meant another pie crust (heaven forbid I double up and repeat one) and somehow pecans and oats just seemed the way to go. I should have probably called it a Pecan Oat Raw Pie Crust, but there are arguments about the raw-ness of rolled oats so no-bake was just as easy. And to be honest this crust is a bit like taking a pecan … [Read more...]
No-Bake Vegan Pumpkin Pie {GF VG DF SF NF Paleo}
Good lord this a good pie. Like insanely must not eat all the filling with a spoon before putting it in the crust good. And crazy text my mother and sister-in-law as I'm licking said spoon to tell them how good it is and that they need to make it for Thanksgiving good. And why on earth didn't I do this ages ago good. I have no idea why this recipe took me so long to piece together. To use the principals of my Key Lime Pie and Lemon Custard and apply them to the cooked-custard Vegan Pumpkin … [Read more...]
Cranberry Maple Griddle Cakes
Conversations with RJ... J: Do you want a cookie-cake thing for the car? R: YES PLEASE. What's in them?... Cranberries? J: Yep, but I could have added any dried fruit really, the original recipe calls for currants. R: Oh, currants would be nice. J: You don't even know what a current is. R: Yes I do, it's like a raisin, but on a salad. J: Oh you've just written the start of my post. Also, bwahahaha. Have you ever visited a blog and thought you yourself, "I recognise the name and know … [Read more...]
Turkey Ragu
He always orders the house-made pappardelle, I always order the seafood pasta. We share the cabbage and walnut salad and spoon-battle over the last skerricks of dessert. The ragu on the pappardelle changes each time, and while variations of beef and lamb are on regular rotation, turkey has only appeared once at our regular date night haunt... The tacchino was ordered with a touch of hesitation, lunchmeat and overcooked Christmas roll far too vivid in his memory, but with one bite all bets … [Read more...]
Kimchi Grilled Cheese
Apparently I'm on the local magpie mafia hit list. The first attempt came out of the blue as I was buzzed by a particularly aggressive black and white bird while walking down a path at a local reserve. I took my hair clip out thinking that may have been its target -- but the angry bugger wasn't having it and circled around for another pass. With a feeling the attempts on my life weren't going to stop any time soon I turned to see where the hired-gun had landed and made eye contact -- I now … [Read more...]
