If you are prone to occasional anger over political things it is probably best to stop reading now and come back for the next cake post instead…So I have to vote again. Yep, have to. It is mandatory here, and they SEND YOU A FINE if you don’t – for EVERY election, not just the big ones. Even had a table at the citizenship ceremony where they sign you up before you can go in the room to get your certificate and native plant. But it probably is a good system as I would imagine that it makes … [Read more...]
Ribbon Salad with Port Vinaigrette
As promised, this is the accompaniment to the White Fish Burgers posted yesterday. There is just something fun about vegetables in the shape of ribbons, don't you agree? They look complicated and fancy but are in fact easier than chopping everything up, especially if you have a thick peeler. Woohoo, par-tee [bit excited about veggies aren't I...] The Port Vinaigrette a really nice, slightly different dressing...if I do say so myself - it makes way more than you need for the … [Read more...]
White Fish Burgers
So I've got some recipes coming up for dips, sauces and bread but I figure that I should get a main in there somewhere first! This was initially inspired by one of my many cooking magazines – and the fact that I am getting sick of simply pan-frying fish. These Fish Burgers are pretty flexible but amazingly there were actually spring onions [green onions, scallions, whatever you call them] in the fridge and I happened to have an ear of corn on hand too - thought it might be a nice … [Read more...]
Ahh-ha moment(s)
1 - Thanks to a post on The Pioneer Woman's Photography section I have discovered the 'vivid' setting on my Nikon. Can I get a hallelujah. Amazing. Have been incredibly frustrated by the slightly dull appearance of my photos in pretty much any light and the need to adjust them [or not and just deal with it because I can't be bothered....]. The difference is remarkable. It does make carrots glow even more but for the sake of everything else, I can deal with that one! 2 - I have just figured … [Read more...]
Make good?
So I have a cousin that sends cards for every occasion. Not only remembers, but sends cards – without fail, for holidays, birthdays and even anniversaries. Must be hereditary as her mother is exactly the same. She even sent me an email to apologize for sending Christmas cards late this year, it still arrived before New Years…..I knew there was something I meant to do in December…. I on the other hand am about as good with cards as I am with emails. I think about it, have the best … [Read more...]
Playing Tourist
Humm, a bit screwy with the timeliness but I'm going to flash back on the past few weeks. Mom came to visit Sydney for the first time in 6 ½ years – fair enough, for most of that we were either living in NYC or making the trip to America-land about every 6 months... It was great to have her here and, as I’d imagine is the case for most people, I really don’t get the chance to play tourist in my own city until company comes [and honesty, we are really bloody far from anything so not many people … [Read more...]
Stuff around town…
...including another installment of 'this week in consumerism'. So a month or so ago NAB (one of the big 4 banks here) launched a campaign against the other 3 biggies. Obviously they aren't the only banks in Australia and some time last week I saw this: Nice one. Here are some other things I've come across lately - sharing because they either elicited a good belly laugh or a huah? reaction. Apparently you can now outsource breathing for your employees - oh good, I was worried … [Read more...]
