It is officially autumn in America-land. The seasons are changing, Halloween is full steam ahead there are pumpkin recipes everywhere. Sydney on the other hand has not yet woken up to the fact that it should be getting warmer here, and although it is now light until after 7pm [thank you daylight savings] it still feels more like winter than spring. All of these things combined, along with the promise I made to continue the 'brunch we never had' and the fact that shortly the trip recap will … [Read more...]
Perfect Banana Cake with White Choc Passion-Fruit Icing
I think I owe you a cake post. Here I am talking about hotels, and travels, and footy but there has been a distinct lack of cake. Now anyone popping over from October Unprocessed ~ waves ~ hi! ~ is looking at this cake and probably saying 'how is she listed on the #unprocessed posting roll-call and baking stuff like this?'. Easy, it's not for me ... I have been making the cakes for work birthdays lately and, well, there is not quite the desire that I have to eschew sugar and butter and white … [Read more...]
Hotel Indigo – San Diego
We have been known to go on 'reasonably' well planned trips having booked no accommodation other than perhaps the first city on the itinerary. In America-land this is not too much of a big deal as pretty much any small town you drive into will have a minimum of 4 chain hotels, all only metres apart, all for around $75 per night including free wi-fi ... there is a very good chance that we spent two weeks driving down the west coast in this manner a few years back. In Europe it is feasible to … [Read more...]
It’s that time of year…
Upon the conclusion of the TV hijacking from the first 2 of 3 different codes of 'sports played by men, with a ball of nearly identical proportions' that are on this weekend ... RJ: So tomorrow there are only two more games I want to watch. JJ: ... [crickets] ... I foresee more baking in the near future. I should be thankful he doesn't watch America-land college ball. At least I'll get a short break before 'sports played by men with a bat for 1-5 days, sometimes ending in a … [Read more...]
Chili Garlic Monkfish Pasta
Watching cooking shows when hungry is kind of like going grocery shopping on an empty stomach. Probably not the best idea. We were watching the final episode of The Wild Gourmets in Spain on the ABC the other night ... by the end of it I was dying for clams with white beans and tomatoes, and white fish marinated in salsa verde with yellow potatoes and a salad of some kind with jamon and pine nuts and strong blue cheese - I don't even eat meat, it was at the point of ridiculous. Alas it was … [Read more...]
…with sprinkles on top
You know those friends who have that, history, with you. The ones you can talk to every day, or once a month, or only once a year, yet each time you pick up exactly where you left off and go a million miles a minute until you part. The ones you can go to for anything, anytime and not even have to explain because, they just know. The ones who have seen way too much and know way too much and love you anyway? The lovely Running Yankee asked if I would make her a birthday cake this year, and … [Read more...]
Cornbread Waffles with Cinnamon Apple Compote
Now I figure that all this trip recapping will go on for quite a while, and in the meantime the least I can do is make you brunch. That said, it is only fair to let you know that the sub-title of this post is 'the brunch we didn't have until now'... Someone Tweeted a pic the first day of Blogher from Cafe 222 in San Diego. I looked it up on The Google Machine and decided that as it was just on the edge of Gas Lamp, and only blocks from our hotel, we needed to go there immediately if not … [Read more...]
