Behind the Scenes: Freedom Spring / Summer Styling Session

Behind the Scenes: Freedom Spring/Summer Styling Session

A few weeks back — just before jetting off across the world — I was invited by Freedom Australia to pop down to the Moore Park store and style a living scene using pieces from the new Spring / Summer range.

Now I could have picked the living space option, starting with a faux brick wall and a gorgeous lounge in-situ, but for so much as I wanted to live my dream of having a stylish living room (if only for an hour) I felt I should probably go for the dining space instead.

It was at this point, presented with the equivalent of a blank piece of paper, that my heart skipped a beat, or three.

And so with the clock ticking down I went for a very technical approach…

  1. collect all of the things and put them on the table
  2. take things out until it works

Plates and glasses and boards and cutlery were layered and stacked, then re-layered and stacked.

Some items were replaced with things spotted from across the floor, some were non-negotiable inclusions (hello marble-print plates), others were edited out all together.

There was a hunt for chairs, a round of picture-hanging antics that resulted in exactly what we started with in the first place, and a pendant light for good measure.

And then, all of a sudden, the empty space was no longer empty.

So I did exactly what you’d expect me to do — I gave the staff an OH&S heart attack and stood on a chair. Yes, I took my shoes off first.

That same day a few other Instagram friends — Bondville, Life Love & Hiccups, Ish and Chi and Little Paper Lane to be exact — were making their own magic with those aforementioned living space areas.

I’ve put together a few of my favourite items that appeared across all the scenes — but the best part of it all is that you can win a $100 voucher from Freedom to spend on the Spring / Summer collection (or anything else you desire).

Gorgeous picks from Freedom! I love the freshness that Spring & Summer bring into the home! Eating outdoors always means beautiful tableware and lots of friends over!

I’m updating our living space by adding funky decorations and homewares in a colour palette very similar to the one you’ve used here! I’m all about turquoise for a pop of colour, muted down by pastel yellow, baby blue, mint green and touches of gold to add some glamour.

I do hope you ate your well-earned cookie after finishing this post, possibly with one for RJ (just so there can be an #rjholdingcookie hashtag!). Gorgeous styling JJ. I love everything about this – the colour palette, the fresh florals, ceramic, timber and light. The fabric on that Andes chair is stunning, too… it perfectly encapsulates what I’m hoping to do in our house over the Summer months – bringing the ‘outside in’ with fresh fabrics, splashes of colour and permanent greenery (which I can hopefully keep alive. Watch this space!). Aaron and I bought most of the key items in our apartment from Freedom when we first got married, right down to the custom fabric on our well-loved sofa (which is now covered in Loki’s shedding winter coat, but anyways…). We haven’t been back for a couple of years, mostly to avoid temptation, but it’s heaps of fun to now see one of my favourite bloggers/stylists teaming up with Freedom for this Summer special. Gorgeous post xx

I need me some new bright and cheery cushion covers for my lounge room and all the outdoorsy things to get into gear for summer. I love your chosen items for that room. Gorgeous.

Those marble plates are to die for! Just imagine the beautiful styling I could do with those. I love that you stood on the chair!!! But as much as I’d love to fill a trolley (do they have trolleys at Freedom?!?!) with beautiful props, I would definitely have to purchase home beautifying things. We need to update our home for spring, summer and forever! And would love to do that with photo frames to highlight amazing memories, a rug in each of our bedrooms and well, those marble plates.

I can’t imagine how gorgeous your home must be – such style, and grace. Meanwhile i am entirely in love with those bowls.

So, how I want to update my home for spring and summer… I want to replace the back door where my rescue cattle dog has tried to chew his way inside. Didn’t like being left outside in the cold in winter it seems. Wouldn’t have been outside in the cold if he hadn’t chewed his kennel to pieces (literally) the previous year. Not sure Freedom can help with that though so on a more practical note, I am working on an inspiration wall – a wall full of things to remind me what I want to achieve and what I am capable of. Plenty of gorgeous pictures in the Freedom catalogue to help with that.

Sure wish I lived in Australia so I could enter. I need to figure out how to introduce the Aqua of my new cast iron soup pot into my lounge area, without starting from scratch. Then again……

I love your table styling JJ! We’ve just moved so we have a whole new space we need to update for Spring & Summer. We have a blank canvas of white walls and timber floor but I think we need fresh flowers, those marble plates and a whole heap of cocktail glasses for a housewarming party.

Spring & Summer are definitely a time for shedding old skin and starting fresh. So this year, I’m going to go through all of my wardrobes, cupboards and drawers, take out anything I don’t love or don’t use regularly enough for it to warrant space, and pop down to Vinnie’s with a bootful to donate. At least.

Which would make extra room for stuff I do love.

    Like those marble print plates.

    Hm.

I’d update my home for spring and summer through lighting. I tend to eat outside more so lighting up the patio with candles or fairy lights would create a lovely atmosphere during the warmer nights

Well, I moved into my apartment in April and am still using cardboard boxes stacked on their sides as clothes-holders and upside down cardboard boxes as coffee tables, so if that gives any indication, I desperately need help making my house better in every way. Oh, and pretty much every wall is blindingly white empty.

Loving the copper and turquoise combination! I’m hopping to refresh my apartment with pops of copper decorations (maybe a candle or accent light) and a new piece of artwork, perhaps a watercolor or oil feature piece? All that’s missing from this shoot is some of your yummy treats!

I would update my tabletop for a summer of eating and entertaining. New plates and glasses ready for the entourage of visitors we have heading to Sydney this summer to visit us. Gorgeous photos as usual. So going to Freedom to pick up some of those pieces!

I took this video on Jan 1. I even wrote a caption I took this video on Jan 1. I even wrote a caption and everything. And I intended to post it that day as a reflection moving into a new year. But instead, mom and I went out for pizza and wine, and then it was Jan 2, and so on and so on.
🌀
So instead you’re getting it on Feb 1. A new day and another new month (but what is a new month or a new year, other than a societal convention really).
☀️
Because, each day, each sunrise, we have the opportunity to start anew - no matter how big or little that start may be. A chance to take another step forward - no matter how many steps back you feel you’re fighting against.
🌀
Whether this past year brought blinding joy or paralysing grief (and in whatever measure of balance or imbalance), I hope each new day sees the landscape of your life look one step closer to what you imagine it to be. And that when the waves roll in and change that landscape, you can roll with it and see the beauty and possibility on the other side.
🌊
If you’ve made it this far, congratulations, have a cookie 🍪 And I’ll leave you with the rolling waves and blue sky of a California beach in January. I truly hope this year sees us all grow stronger and move forward with each new day. Going backwards is simply not an option.

Could I have made one dish? Of course. Did I instead prepare quail eggs four ways, bake mini loaves of brioche, make mini waffles, dig through the prop closet for the smallest dishes, and set up an entire table? Of course I did.

Sometimes this combo gets prawns too 🍤. Most of the time I don’t bother mixing the ingredients in a bowl and just layer them on top. The cheese is a hard goat cheese (because I can’t do 🐄). The ‘spices’ 🌱 is Sicilian oregano. The measurements are random at best - a handful of this, a splash of that.

If you have a fave veggie or seafood pizza combo I’d love to hear it. Because as Ms.S says, voila, yummy yummy pizza!
