In My Kitchen: August 2015

August 11, 2015 By JJ 9 Comments

It’s once again time for In My Kitchen and as per usual this is a collection of things from the past month — a small snippet of those seen over on Instagram — in loosely interpreted categories and no particular order…

Kitchen Shenanigans

I decided one night a few weeks back that I needed to bake bread. I didn’t measure, kneaded and rested randomly, and ended up with the best loaf I’ve made in years (wholewheat, whole spelt blend).

Lunch break. Aka taking time out from shooting food to take a photo of my food... ???? #vortex In other news I decided last night that I needed to bake bread, I didn't measure, kneaded and rested randomly, and ended up with the best loaf I've made in

Lunch the next day (where I took time out from shooting food to take a photo of my food because I live in a vortex) was one slice w avo and tomato, other slice with choc/banana/tahini spread and berries. I think I won Monday, whether or not I can replicate the bread is still up for discussion.

Can we talk about this amazing mushroom sausage experiment? Gf and vegan and crazy good and I really need to make them again (and write an actual recipe) to post.

First meal of the day still counts as breakfast, even if eaten well after lunch, right? ???? In other news can we talk about the amazing mushroom sausage experiment I made the other night? Gf and vegan and crazy good. Leftovers making a cameo appearanc

Making a cameo appearance here with kale and broccoli sautéed in olive oil, avocado, hummus, sumac & dukkah. Back to using a wide-mouth jar as a tea pot for obvious reasons (ie lots of tea). In other news the first meal of the day still counts as breakfast, even if eaten well after lunch, right?

Warning, #beautifullystyledrant rapidly approaching…

Bought these gorgeous lemons at a major grocery store. Got them for a steal because they were bagged up as “odd”.

  1. Beyond pleased that not-so-pretty produce is being sold instead of trashed BECAUSE FRUIT AND VEG SHOULDN’T LOOK PERFECT AND PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT.
  2. Can someone please tell me what on earth makes these lemons imperfect? Not really looking for opinions unless you’re a lemon grower, just voicing my incredulousness.
  3. The ones sold at full price, obviously deemed perfect, were light in weight for size with crazy thick skin so probably very little juice – these had thin skin and more juice than I ever get from a lemon.

Had a cauliflower that needed to be used up so I made a huge jug of chocolate mousse (if you’re confused by that statement you need this in your life) that contains more veggies than most soups.

I recently learned that the small gold pineapples (the ones with the crowns removed before selling) are actually a newish variety that is super sweet/low acid in winter. The larger ones with crowns are a summer variety and not particularly nice in winter.

Eggs are one of my favourite things to eat but may be my most hated thing to prep and style.

Eggs are one of my favourite things to eat but may be my most hated thing to prep and style. Yes they were old, yes I added bicarb to the water, yes they are perfect inside but I'll be damned if I can get the shells off, even under water. #behindthescenes

Yes the ones I made two days earlier from the same carton were fine, yes these were old before boiling, yes I added bicarb to the water, yes they were fully cooled, yes they are perfect inside but I’ll be damned if I can get the shells off, even under running water.

I’ve since been told to only add the eggs to already simmering water, and to peel while still warm, to add vinegar to the water and all sorts of other things that may well work until they don’t. Some people also shared the teaspoon trick (peel off very end, stick in spoon and run around inside of shell) which works no mater what and will probaly be my go-to from now on.

When I attend a lunch with fruit and veg as centrepieces I’m bound to ask for a bag, take some home and make a rainbow. In related news the orange tomatoes are one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.

Props totally need to earn their keep or they are shown the door around here! I would love to see how you store your enviable collection. Just added cauliflower to this weeks’ fruit and vege box. In great need of chocolate mousse. Love all your perfectly styled photos and rant about unnamed supermarket.

So many beautiful things in your ‘IMK’ post. I was reading that the head of the pineapple is actually the start of a plant and so when the farmer sends them to market with their ‘crowns’ on they loose out on next seasons crop. Beautiful photography as always.

I took this video on Jan 1. I even wrote a caption I took this video on Jan 1. I even wrote a caption and everything. And I intended to post it that day as a reflection moving into a new year. But instead, mom and I went out for pizza and wine, and then it was Jan 2, and so on and so on.
🌀
So instead you’re getting it on Feb 1. A new day and another new month (but what is a new month or a new year, other than a societal convention really).
☀️
Because, each day, each sunrise, we have the opportunity to start anew - no matter how big or little that start may be. A chance to take another step forward - no matter how many steps back you feel you’re fighting against.
🌀
Whether this past year brought blinding joy or paralysing grief (and in whatever measure of balance or imbalance), I hope each new day sees the landscape of your life look one step closer to what you imagine it to be. And that when the waves roll in and change that landscape, you can roll with it and see the beauty and possibility on the other side.
🌊
If you’ve made it this far, congratulations, have a cookie 🍪 And I’ll leave you with the rolling waves and blue sky of a California beach in January. I truly hope this year sees us all grow stronger and move forward with each new day. Going backwards is simply not an option.

When the middle little insisted on buying quail eggs over Christmas, but due to allll the other food we never cooked them, I simply couldn’t let the little guys go to waste.
🥚
Could I have made one dish? Of course. Did I instead prepare quail eggs four ways, bake mini loaves of brioche, make mini waffles, dig through the prop closet for the smallest dishes, and set up an entire table? Of course I did.
💥
Swipe to the end for reference on the size of the eggs and loaf.

🍕
Sometimes this combo gets prawns too 🍤. Most of the time I don’t bother mixing the ingredients in a bowl and just layer them on top. The cheese is a hard goat cheese (because I can’t do 🐄). The ‘spices’ 🌱 is Sicilian oregano. The measurements are random at best - a handful of this, a splash of that.
🍕
If you have a fave veggie or seafood pizza combo I’d love to hear it. Because as Ms.S says, voila, yummy yummy pizza!
