Yesterday we boycotted responsibility. It was Saturday after all, but we even boycotted weekend responsibility. We did not do the grocery shopping or cleaning, or go house-hunting, or exercise, or do any work. We slept late - really late. And then went out for brunch. And then wandered across the city to a festival day type thing. And then sat on the grass and ignored what was playing on stage to talk to each other instead and soak up a gorgeous Sydney autumn day. And then made a nice dinner … [Read more...]
Playing Tourist
Humm, a bit screwy with the timeliness but I'm going to flash back on the past few weeks. Mom came to visit Sydney for the first time in 6 ½ years – fair enough, for most of that we were either living in NYC or making the trip to America-land about every 6 months... It was great to have her here and, as I’d imagine is the case for most people, I really don’t get the chance to play tourist in my own city until company comes [and honesty, we are really bloody far from anything so not many people … [Read more...]
Smells like summer
So scent is one of the strongest triggers for memory...When it rains on a hot day the smell reminds me of the street I grew up on during spring storms; Sultana&Bran Muffins take me immediately to cold mornings at Ro’s house; The other day it smelled like the Jersey Shore in the middle of Sydney [that slightly sharp but not entirely unpleasant humid boardwalk and salt water smell that makes me feel like a 14 year old with a perm]; and Drakkar Noir is 9th grade all over again [and makes me … [Read more...]
Happy Australia Day!
It has been the hottest Australia Day in 20 years. In the 'land of the long weekend', a mid-week-day-off-work is a good start to being patriotic! Especially if it includes jumping in the surf and getting a bit of sun. We couldn't be bothered going over the bridge into the city today and headed up to our favourite beach for a dip instead. I took these pics on Australia Day a few years ago but they still stand true, and the blue sky is pretty spot on for what today looks like! There is … [Read more...]
Niiiine-times
Nine years ago today Kari and I landed in Sydney for a bit of an adventure. I had told my flatmates in Denver that I would be back in 6 months, oops... ...we found a place to live [with 10 other backpackers] - the terrace had 4 bedrooms [ours was an enclosed back porch type of thing that we took figuring that if everyone else was terrible we could just keep to ourselves, luckily there was no need to worry] - the cockroaches were regular guests, and one of the bathrooms was a separate outside … [Read more...]
Out with a bang
It was a lovely end to 2010 and a great beginning to 2011. New Years Eve Day picnic on the beach with friends followed by unbelievable fireworks on Sydney Harbour. Off we go on another rotation around the sun.... Our view of the Harbour before the show began: I really do believe that there is little better than a good [or even average] fireworks show and Sydney puts on one of the best. With the New Year still making its way across the globe, here it is: … [Read more...]
Food, glorious food
So, cooking takes much longer when snapping photos along the way - and I was told by RJ on x-mas day that I was acting like a tourist - but you know what, it makes me drool looking back at the pics! You may want to have a snack nearby just in case... Stuffing and Candied Sweet Potatoes to start the feast. The Stuffing actually fell in the 'aligned with the detox' category. Def doesn't negate all the other dishes but hey, close enough for x-mas! [yes, detox over Christmas, slightly insane, … [Read more...]
