I might be a little bit obsessed with apples. As much as I love summer fruit - peaches and mangos and plums oh my - I do mourn the brief break in the apple season. Yes, of course you can get them year round in the big chain grocery stores but when stone fruit is ripe for the picking the apple trees are just starting to bloom again... draw your own conclusions... Apple season just launched again here and this will be the first full season Australian growers are using 'Aussie Apples' … [Read more...]
Oat Bran, Almond, Ginger and Pear Porridge
If you haven't noticed there's a bit of a theme happening here. January Loaded Oats for the New Year, February Peach Pie Porridge, March (well not quite March) Oat Bran, Almond, Ginger and Pear Porridge. Who needs 12 months of shirtless firemen when you can have 12 months of porridge... never mind, don't answer that. I had some pears left over from my toasted sandwich and this was the breakfast solution on a busy morning. Pears go brilliantly with almonds and ginger and both up the … [Read more...]
Peach Pie Porridge
Back in January I posted those lovely Loaded Oats for the New Year and declared that I was going to attempt to share more real food and less desserts. Yeah, that lasted about a week. In an attempt to get back to real food I bring you a second porridge recipe for the second month of the year. It's only pretending a little bit to be dessert. Loaded Oats for the New Year
I was having a look back at some posts from the end of 2011 and realised that for someone who doesn't really eat sugar there were a hell of a lot of desserts and almost no savory dishes being shared... oops. Some of it has to do with my ongoing struggle with nighttime photography and not having the right lighting [vow to sort that out sooner rather than later] because most cooking is being done after getting home from the real-life job. And while I used to snap away and post delicious recipes … [Read more...]
Bounty Bites
Everyone needs to have a treat every now and then. If it ticks the healthy and satisfying and moorish boxes all at once, even better. I found these Organic Dates on sale the other day and had to do something with them. All of the flavours in these little morsels of goodness meld together beautifully and nothing overpowers. I could have called them Coconut-Chocolate-Date-Nut-Truffle-Balls, but Bounty Bites just sounds nicer to me... Make sure you don’t miss the alternate recipe combination … [Read more...]
Spelt Plum Cake
So when we started the detox my first concern [obviously] was how I could make cake that we are ‘allowed’ to eat. This was followed very soon after by how I could make pizza happen but that we'll get to later. I have determined that I love the thought of cake as much as cake itself. It’s in part due to the texture – the dense, rich, comforting wonderfulness that you just can’t get from anything else. No it’s not a carb craving [toast with almond spread solves that], or a sweet craving [piece of … [Read more...]
