Tradition is a funny thing. It can be as old as time itself -- steeped in mystery and history with little known about how it started, or it can be shiny and new -- just starting to form. Eventually the traditions all mingle, some fading away, some becoming stronger, depending on the situation and people involved. Christmas tradition for my family always started with a long Christmas Eve-day drive as we headed over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house. Yes, seriously. Santa … [Read more...]
Salted Caramel Truffles – Raw, vegan and impossibly good.
I had no idea when I chose 'Heavenly Holiday Truffles' as the theme of the December Sweet Adventures Blog Hop that I would become obsessed with turning EVERY FLAVOUR EVER into a truffle. Seriously. A google-machine search on 'truffle' renders the expected chocolate versions, but the same search on Pinterest reveals the most stunning variations you could ever imagine and sends the imagination into overdrive. No doubt the purists will shout and stamp their feet, insisting that … [Read more...]
Cucumber Salad & a Scandinavian Inspired Brunch Spread
One evening last week, well after midnight if I'm to be honest, I started writing a story inspired by this salad. Or perhaps, more accurately, this salad brought back memories of the Scandinavia portion of our trip a few years back. However life (social and otherwise) reared its head once again and somewhere between working out how to make my computer see the images from my new camera (sigh) and juggling meetings and plans of world domination (only half kidding) the story was put on hold. It … [Read more...]
In My Kitchen: September/October 2013
As good as it was to be off on another adventure it is so very good to be back in my own kitchen and eating veggies on a regular basis. I contemplated doing a collage of the food we ate while we were away but there is just too much of it... I'm not even kidding. Most of the fun things from our holiday ended up on Instagram so if you are looking to waste time, plan an eating holiday, or just make yourself hungry go for it. In the meantime here are a few things from before we left, things … [Read more...]
Macadamia & Coconut Granola – gluten, dairy, fructose free
3 days. 3 days until we're sitting on an airplane headed to America-land. 3 days of blur. The past few weeks have flown by in a flurry of editing and technical-publishing-learning-as-I-go-blah-blah and food photography and art direction. It will continue up until the moment we leave, and quite possibly for a bit while we are away, and as a result the impending holiday is proving a bit more laced with stress than anticipation. Incidentally, any recommendations on things to do and places to … [Read more...]
Chai Spiced Snickerdoodles & a makeover, of course
I have no story to tell today. My head is full, but full of lists and need-to-dos and must-dos and should-dos. The lists squeeze the stories into a tiny room with little light and a window that seems to be painted shut. The stories bang on the door every now and then, demanding attention. I appease them with tea and cookies. I'm hoping I can appease you with the same. These cookies have been percolating in my head every since they were suggested by Jackie B over on this post as … [Read more...]
Crunchy French Toast
His magical words fought through the fog of my groggy travel brain, "I found a place for brunch, they are famous for something called Crunchy French Toast, you should probably get up..." It was the last morning of our huge adventure holiday and at the end of that day was a 14-hour flight home, followed by a return to real life, a hard look at what I wanted to do with myself, and a taco/ice cream/pie belly to shed if my jeans were to ever fit again. Brunch sounded like the perfect … [Read more...]
