I've realised recently (or perhaps I've been aware of it for quite a while, ahem) that I rarely share recipes for actual meals here. Cakes and cookies are well represented as are sides and sauces and things made with bourbon, but it seems -- other than an occasional sandwich which totally counts as a complete meal -- that brunch is about as close as I get to full blown, serve to guests or family members for dinner, dishes. Given, most things I eat during the day are fridge surprise bowls, … [Read more...]
In My Kitchen: August 2015
It’s once again time for In My Kitchen and as per usual this is a collection of things from the past month — a small snippet of those seen over on Instagram — in loosely interpreted categories and no particular order… ------ Kitchen Shenanigans I decided one night a few weeks back that I needed to bake bread. I didn't measure, kneaded and rested randomly, and ended up with the best loaf I've made in years (wholewheat, whole spelt blend). Lunch the next day (where I took time out from … [Read more...]
10 Carry-on Essentials for a Long-haul Flight
Accessibility is everything on an airplane, no matter the length of the flight, and there are a few items to make an under-seat carry-on worth the valuable space it takes away from your feet. Some of the key components make an appearance in 10 Tips for Rocking a Long-haul Flight, but it's the extra bits and pieces that can really make a difference between being the person who alights from the gate looking fresh and one that looks like they travelled on a third-world bus. 10 Carry-on … [Read more...]
10 Tips for Rocking a Long-haul Flight

Creamy Spiced Apple-Nog (aka Vegan Egg-Nog)
Huh, well it seems that between a Pumpkin Upside-Down Cake last week and a twist on Egg-Nog this week I've unintentionally set the scene for Christmas in July. How terribly festive of me (or more appropriately what a terribly appropriate response to my perpetual complaining about how cold I am...). Maybe I should have convinced RJ to let me leave the tree up for another month. So how did I come to make a concoction named Apple-Nog (or Not-Egg-Nog as I've been affectionately calling it) … [Read more...]
Caramel Pumpkin Upside-Down Cake
There's a story somewhere in my head about life turning upside-down. It may be a story about the decisions you make that lead to life swerving left instead of right, and left ends up being so very right. Or perhaps a story about the decisions that life makes for you while it dances around like an obnoxious frat boy singing lalalala and holding its fingers in its ears, ignoring your instance that this was not-in-the-plan, even if there was no real plan to speak of. I have all … [Read more...]
Lemon, Coconut & Passionfruit Popsicles
When one makes bowls and bowls of meringue and swiss meringue buttercream for a completely insane cake, one is left with a container of egg yolks. And when one is left with a container of egg yolks one has little other option than to make lemon curd (obviously). Now I could have stopped there and eaten lemon curd on all the things for days and that would have been ok with me... But there was also an enormous bag of passionfruit on the bench from a recent media … [Read more...]
