So scent is one of the strongest triggers for memory…When it rains on a hot day the smell reminds me of the street I grew up on during spring storms; Sultana&Bran Muffins take me immediately to cold mornings at Ro’s house; The other day it smelled like the Jersey Shore in the middle of Sydney [that slightly sharp but not entirely unpleasant humid boardwalk and salt water smell that makes me feel like a 14 year old with a perm]; and Drakkar Noir is 9th grade all over again [and makes me snigger whenever I come across it on an adult, as I associate it only with 16 year old boys in the 90s].
Quick digression – There are Eucalyptus [Gum] trees all over Oz. Without too much of a science lesson they are indigenous to the continent and they are evergreens – which means the foliage stays on during the winter and things don’t look too bare.
Anyway, around our apartment are tons of Lemon Gums, and due to the overwhelming aroma they put off this time of year [especially after the rain] I have recently added a scent to my memory bank that will probably stick as ‘summer on the north side’ for a long time…The leaves smell like spicy lemon, it is brilliant and it is what I get hit with every time I walk outside.
Shame the Internets isn’t scratch and sniff in this instance.
