Gluten-free, mostly dairy-free, and wholly vegetarian -- but don’t think for a moment that any recipe in My Darling Lemon Thyme - Recipes from my real food kitchen by Emma Galloway is anything less than mouthwatering. I’ve known Emma online for a while, but last year I had to pleasure to meet her in person and have a lovely chat over lunch. A soft-spoken, New Zealand ex-pat, she is amazingly passionate about food and it comes through in every word, recipe and photo on her blog and in her … [Read more...]
Roasted Quince with Vanilla & Mandarin
Conversations with RJ... R: Hey, where does bellybutton lint come from? J: I have no idea, I think it just happens. R: Do you get it? J: No, that's your special skill, but did you know that there are whole factories in China that harvest belly-button lint for quilts? R: Bullshit...? J: Hahahahaha aaaahahahahah ahahahah R: You're an idiot J: Can't talk. Laughing.too.hard. Ahahahahahah ahahhahaha. ------ R: I'm going to the shops, I'll see if I can get the Lego Movie. J: Can you also … [Read more...]
Roasted Rainbow Winter Vegetables
A week or two ago inspiration landed on my front step. It came in the form of a simply gorgeous hamper of winter fruit and veggies from the lovely people at Sydney Markets, and it arrived just in time. You see kitchen motivation at that point had been severely lacking -- I'll blame it on winter although winter isn't fully to blame -- but after a day or two of staring at that box of colour a trickle turned into a flood and before I knew it I had ideas spinning around like little tornados … [Read more...]
Fresh-Baked Bagel for One (Honey Wholewheat & Cinnamon Raisin)
It is decidedly shortsighted to make only one bagel, especially a bagel this good. Perhaps that is why in the past 36 hours I've made this recipe three times. Bagels -- for anyone who has ever eaten a proper one and knows how very different they are to a roll with a hole in the centre masquerading as a bagel -- can be a touchy subject. They must be dense enough to hold up to a shmear or gooey cheese egg, chewy on the outside due to boiling before baking, but just tender enough in the centre … [Read more...]
Smokey BBQ Beans
Another one to work my way through drafts and archives... ------ Created originally to go with the brisket, sharing these beans now was spurred on by a stunningly disappointing serving of baked eggs experienced this morning at a local cafe. The eggs were fine, the beans however were sickly sweet and straight out of a can. Price and location aside I really wanted a good brunch, so I now feel the need to make these or these or this for cafe-in-my-kitchen baked eggs... Sometimes you … [Read more...]
Baked Coffee Doughnuts
I'm no stranger to waking up to the intoxicating smell of coffee. Growing up, the coffee pot was burbling away each morning before anyone was even out of bed, and both my parents drank it by the bucket. I however, other than a brief dalliance in collage involving late-night study-driven coffee consumption tarted up with copious amounts of milk and sugar, never joined club-coffee. Of course there has always been an affinity for coffee ice cream and tiramisu (seeing a trend?) -- but when … [Read more...]
Skillet Baked Eggs – Kale, Tomato Beans & Dukkah
By the looks of my posts these days you'd think all we eat is dessert. My Instagram feed however is quite a different story, a bit more of a social media smoke and mirrors filtered within an inch of its life realistic view of what makes it to the table. Working from home and being a big fan of using-leftovers-until-there-is-nothing-left-over can make for some interesting combinations, but the results are (generally) wholesome and filling. Now as much as I tend to just sautee a whole … [Read more...]
